The Colosseum, the most famous attraction in Italy, which welcomes over 7 million visitors annually, has been fraught with harrowing incidents such as “predatory crimes and drug dealing,” according to Italian news agency ANSA.
In July, a group of around 40 youths fired fireworks directly at police cars, injuring officers at Largo Gaetana Agnesi, the terrace overlooking the 1,946 year-old amphitheater and directly above its new $8.3 billion subway station.
In the ordinance, Lamberto Giannini, Rome’s prefect in charge of security, said the crimes have been carried out “predominantly by groups of young individuals of non-EU origin,” ANSA reported.
He also blames the spike in crime on the newly opened “Roma Colosseo” metro station, which doubles as a museum, that opened in December.
The precautionary measure, which includes around-the-clock presence of local police and military, was taken in late August and will remain in effect until Dec. 24.
The military — armed and wearing camouflage standing by their vehicles — has always been present in the area, but has not fully deterred criminals, CNN reported.
“Security is tight here, but I just saw a woman get pickpocketed,” Janelle Triton, a Philadelphia tourist visiting the Colosseum, told the outlet.
“She said the thief had gone by the time law enforcement was alerted. “We were told by our hotel not to come here at night though, so we have avoided the area.”
The red-zoned area includes the city’s main Termini train station, which is 1.2 miles from the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, which is located inside Vatican City, and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the site of Pope Francis’ tomb.

I was there in February and almost got into it with an african scam artist. I had watched videos about their scams prior to going there and it was like clock work. So, I knew exactly what to expect. He was pissed at me because i called him out on his shite.
You have to be careful because they have their crew working zones around all the touristy areas and they will gang up on you. Push back on their scams but try and avoid fighting them. The polizia will arrest your arse 9/10 times instead of the worthless scum starting shite.

Serious question. Could you not just ignore him and walk past? I’ll be in Rome for the next 3 days and have been in Europe for over a week. I’ve always been able to walk past in peace and wasn’t forced to confront anyone.
If you were just trying to be a tough guy, that’s all good, but just looking for clarification on why you called him out.

I was there last summer and it wasn’t Middle Easterners, it was North Africans. Same in Paris. As for “avoiding them”, they are aggressive and will get right up in your face. I had one run across four lanes of traffic to try and engage with me. I told him NO loudly when he tried to block my way on the sidewalk.

The Arab Spring was an abysmal failure for the region and a disaster for Europe. The resulting civil wars, famine, and economic downturn forced millions of people from that part of the world into Europe. And the EU, as dumb as they are, welcomed them in with open arms.

The wife and I went there Nov 2019 and while we didn't have any scammers hitting us up at the Colosseum, what we encountered most there were Asian males trying to sell you selfie sticks -the exact same one we had and were using when he approached- and wooden, collapsable salad bowls that they would "clap" at you to get your attention as a way to initiate the conversation/sales pitch.
Heading from Trevi to the Pantheon is where we encountered a small group of black males trying to scam us.
This particular scam is they walk up asking an innocuous question like "do you have the time," "where did you get that (shoes, shirt, etc)," etc. If you don't engage and it's a slow day they may try to guilt you into engaging "why are you scared to talk to me" or something similar.
When we approached, it was just the one guy who initiated contact but I had seen him going back and forth between potential victims and his group of buddies (3 or 4 of them, if memory serves). This particular scam to shake our hand and as he did so he would slip a touristy wrist band from his wrist to yours saying something like "hey, I want you to have this to remember your time here in Rome" then quickly transition to showing you his "new baby back in (Africa)" and how he needed just a few dollars to go back to be with her. But he doesn't want you to just give him money, no, he wants you to buy something else from him (another shitty wristband or some other basic touristy item).
The framework is speed. They want this to happen too fast for you to be able to stop and think. The method is guilt, by "giving" you something they hope to capitalize on a natural immediate sense of indebtedness before rationalization can snuff it out.
The resolution here is to give the item back no matter how much they refuse to take it (they will always take it back so they can reuse it on the next potential victim). You can listen to their pitch, but keep at least slowly moving (their buddies will follow at a distance, but they like sticking to a familiar spot so the farther they get from it the more likely they are to stop the pitch, time is money after all). While this didn't happen to us, some of the instances I read prior to the trip also mentioned do not leave the well-traveled areas with them (not even a half-block). Always stick to the main public area you are in.
A different sort of scam you'll encounter are the gypsies. These are generally eastern Europeans, a lot of them female, who will tempt to pick your pocket. For us it was two females while we were in some store. One of them "accidentally" brushed the back of her hand across my arse as they squeezed behind us through the aisle. She was checking to see if I was carrying a wallet in either of my back pockets. It was extremely quick and she and her friend never stopped talking nor moving (ie: no acknowledgement at all). For this reason, carry your wallet, phone, hotel keycard, etc. in your front pants pockets and on crowded trains just keep your hand(s) in your pocket(s).
Another gypsy trick is to wait at train stations, then get on last to be nearest the doors. Right as the doors begin to close they'll try to snatch an unguarded purse, package, etc.
All that said, Rome was fricking AMAZING! You can't swing a dead cat in that city without hitting some building, statue, bust, etc. that was already old when Columbus first set off to find a new trade route to India by sailing West. Plan your trip about a bit ahead of time by picking a handful of "must-see" things (an understated one I would suggest is the Ufficio Scavi tour which goes beneath St. Peters (the price is ridiculously cheap, they have to keep the groups small and it brings you up into St Peter's without having to wait in line with everyone else).
Getting a pass for the double-decker tour buses is also a good idea. The entire route is only about 45 minutes but it stops at (or near) all of the biggest attractions (all of them run the exact same route, or at least did back then). As a bonus, the drivers there are crazy so if you can sit on the front row up top it's like a Disney thrill ride as the bus barely misses an aquaduct and tons of parked cars while going a ridiculous speed for how crowded the place is.

The sad thing is it’s an easy fix. Collect and deport. Obviously they don’t have gainful employment which is likely a part of their immigration agreement. Hell even if they came in under refugee visa, scamming is illegal, deport them. It’s astounding to me that a continent rich with so much history spanning so many centuries is literally just rolling over and letting history repeat itself. You’d think the locals would get tired of it and give these woke politicians hell. And to the globalist politicians … what is end game here? Do they think things are going well?
