Robocalls, and Their Scams, Are Surging

Though automated calls have long plagued consumers, the volume has skyrocketed in recent years, reaching an estimated 3.4 billion in April, according to YouMail, which collects and analyzes calls through its robocall blocking service. That’s an increase of almost 900 million a month compared with a year ago.
...
Business groups, including the Consumer Bankers Association, counter that defining auto-dialers too broadly would hurt legitimate businesses trying to reach their customers.
Robocallers see the current F.C.C. leadership “as friendly to industry,” said Margot Saunders, senior counsel at the National Consumer Law Center, “and they are anticipating F.C.C. rulings that will enable more calling and forgive past mistakes — or violations of the current law.”
Frick anyone involved in this industry, especially Bridgette from Cardholder Services

I don't even answer my phone anymore if someone in my contact isn't calling me. If it's someone important, they will leave a message.

I get 3-5 calls a week from my area code and prefix. It's just hard to imagine they're profitable (assuming they are) given how most people simply ignore them

It doesn't take too many dumb fricks to be swindled for an automated program to turn a profit, and we sure have a surfeit of morons on this planet.

If the robots had a decent union, it would put a stop to this.

Kill them all with fire.

Any politician that wants to earn some free brownie points simply needs to start talking about this.

Costs pretty much nothing to robodial. The CSR comes in if you answer. They probably make about $1 an hour. Don't need too many victims to come out ahead.
The ones that make zero sense are the ones that always hang up. You know it's a valid number if you don't get an error message. Scammers don't care if the spoof an active or inactive number. So hanging up has no value.

I think that goes for most people. It’s sad that the damned telemarketing industry was allowed to in effect destroy the functionality of phones.

I have been getting calls from people saying that I have called them. The robocalls are using my number. I try to explain and it goes no where. I just don't answer my phone anymore..

Yeah, I’ve been getting two reoccurring ones. One for insurance and the other from “the IRS” saying I’m about to be arrested and owe them thousands in taxes. I contacted the IRS just in case, and they don’t use Robocalls.

Every politician uses robocalls come election time. They are as bad as the scammers.

I got a call like that a few weeks ago. Was on vacation and knew for fact I hadn't called anyone. Wonder how many other times my number has shown up in someone's missed calls and they just don't call back. I'd think 95% of people don't call back an unknown missed number.

If I was in a room with Adolph Hitler, Ajit Pai, and Osama Bin Laden, and I had a gun with three bullets, I would shoot Ajit Pai in the dick three times and beat him to death with the handgun.

The robots are calling several numbers at the same time. When a sucker answers, the robots instantly hang up on the other numbers being dialed. If you answer your phone just after someone else, the robot will hang up on you.

I automatically deny all calls from (985)78-whatever now, unless I know the number. I've even had people calling me bitching about my number calling them constantly, when their number is the one that calls me constantly.
Call blocker from (985)78-whatever is filled up with maybe 100 numbers

I've strung these people along for like 5-10 minutes trying to figure out what they even wamt and it only ends with the guy on the other end cursing me out.
What are they even looking to get with this shite?

What pisses me off the most with these scammers is that one of their big targets are the elderly. These frickers know damn well they can sucker some 87 year old that may be smart, but isn't tech savvy and more prone to the scams.
My dad has his phone on him all the time and gets very anxious when he misses a call. Makes his anxiety issues worse. So I worry he will fall victim to one of these assholes. Have already had several conversations with him telling him that if he doesn't recognize the number...let it go to voicemail. If it is important...they will leave a message.

They’re hoping to get the 70+ year old on the line that lives by themselves to scam them out of their money.
