RIP Kip. He actually managed to make Baton Rouge an alright place to live. You could tell he cared. We could use more men like him.

RIP Kip

Dude knew how to work a room

Still one of the best quotes of all time is from Kip. It was in Tiger Stadium, where it was freezing, when LSU had a public celebration for the 2007 National Championship team.

Kip started his remarks referencing the cold with this gem:

quote:

I went from a soul brother to a cold brother, to a fudgesicle.

and was always talking about his next big election or speaking engagement that he had later that evening (obviously not the case)

That's a tough disease. I had a great uncle who died with it.. This was years ago, but what you mentioned reminded me of it. Towards the end... well months before the end, he started getting ready to duck hunting.. Him and his son in law went on a regular basis when he wasn't sick. He would say several things over and over.. He called his son in law just that so he would say "son in law, get the boat ready, I got a few things to take care of and we can be on out way". Then he would ask him (even though he wasn't there) "how many you think we going to take down today".

They had to pick up his guns and put them where he didn't know where he was at.. I know I got off track, but that made me think about it.

Kip has got to be the only Democrat I can think of that lifelong conservatives will proudly admit they voted for

That’s gotta mean something

I remember that.. :

Well, I remember going to my mom's around the time he said it and she told me and she laughed about it for a week.

He bought me a beer at The Clevelander Hotel & Nightclub on South Beach the night before the Saints Super Bowl.

Did not always agree, but you always knew kip loved BR.

I think this is the biggest thing that is missing since he left the office. The passion and love for BR haven’t been the same. If you have two parties with differing views/philosophies but a common love of the entity they are making decisions for, they will debate and discuss and eventually come up with a solution that is amenable to both sides. And the common love of Baton Rouge earned Kip a lot of trust from people who didn’t necessarily agree with some of his positions because they trusted he was working for the good of the city and not just a portion of it.

Kip was the last democrat I voted for. He would have made a good Lt. Governor. RIP Kip

I did meet him once, at Costco, he was just randomly hanging out there reaching out to people and asking how their life was and if they had concerns. I thought that was pretty cool for a politician not in an election year.

Man RIP Kip. Absolute great mayor for the city and loved the city.

I can remember downtown being a no go but then he made it a good place to be. Plus the fact he could be cowboy Kip, bike cop Kip or baseball coach Kip was awesome.

I ran into him a lot when working downtown, always was a great guy.

Kip is the only Democrat I've ever voted for. Voted for him for Mayor and for Lieutenant Governor against Billy Nungesser. Lt Gov was the job Kip was born for. All you do is dress up and promote state tourism.

Darren always kept 2 Buds on ice for Kip.

The man was a genuinely kind man and he knew how to work a room, that’s for damn sure.

Most proactive mayor ever. I used to see that dude EVERYWHERE. I guarantee had I invited him to my kid's birthday party, he would've made an appearance. RIP
