I got into a conversation with someone concerning Right To Work laws. This person's contention was that Right To Work laws should be repealed. Of course, they are in a union, but proclaim to be a Trump-loving, conservative. One of the things they keep saying is, "if you don't want to join a union, don't work a union job".

Whats does the OT think?

Dumbest thing I have ever heard. The union did not preceed the job.

You are conversing with morons.

No one should be forced to pay dues to work a certain job.

My job is represented by a union and I consider myself conservative. Thanks to right to work laws, I do not pay dues.

Truth is somewhere in the middle. You are kidding yourself if you think big corp wouldnt stick it to the working class without unions.

Laws always in reality do the opposite of what they're called. Patriot act, right to work, etc.

Like they do at the Mercedes, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Honda, Nissan, and Toyota plants all located in the South and non-UAW?

In the Guilded Age, sure. In 2019 with cars and planes and the internet, not so much.

Worker mobility and the ability to communicate across the world instantly has killed the need for unions

I could see a need for unions still in the mining industry, considering mining happens in areas of the country where people have never paid attention.

UPS is the single largest employer in the Teamsters Union. The Division serves more than 250,000 members throughout the United States who work at UPS and UPS Freight.

The ability of a worker to disseminate information to their lawmakers or even the general populace instantly still nullifies the general goal of unions, preventing worker exploitation.

A miner calls CNN from the mine "X company is withholding paychecks unless we work 12 hour days 7 days a week." X company is instantly scewered in front of millions of peoples eyes on TV.

Obviously that's a very general example, but it hits the general point.

My personal opinion is the right to work laws benefit the employer. They can fire you for any reason at any time. They can really give you the business. States that aren’t “right to work” states have much better employee conditions IMO.
