I think a very high percentage of people drink around their children. All family and social gatherings revolve around alcohol. Go to any tailgate and you will find more alcohol than can be consumed and children are all around.

We never hide drinking from the kids and we drink about 4 times a night. Our kids are not sheltered and they will either be valedictorians of their class or within the top 3. So there's that.
We simply tell them that they need to be 21 to drink. How hard is that?

like with most things, I'll teach my kids about moderation
if the kids see their parents not being able to control themselves or act within moderation, that is where the issues begin, especially with unhealthy vices

i try to avoid getting drunk around children. but if you bring your kids to a place where people get drunk, that is ALL ON YOU.

I drink all the time around my kids. I use it as an example of what not to be like when they grow up.

But you admitted the flaw in your own argument. I don't give a flying frick about their "impressionable minds" (It's impossible to shield them to that degree, IMO), just the physical health effects of the second hand exposure. An effect alcohol doesn't have.
How is that hypocritical?

Gosh maybe we should stop eating french fries and cookies and watching tv in front of our kids as well.
Honestly part of growing up is seeing adults handling themselves responsibly, and (occasionally) seeing adults being idiots. It's up to the parents and other responsible adults to frame the behavior as good or bad so the kid can learn. Sheltering your kids too much is doing them a disservice.

As a kid, my parents drank in front of us, but the extended family was split on the issue. On my mother's side (all NOLA), drinking was at every family occasion. On my dad's side (half NOLA dago and half north Florida Baptist redneck) there was absolutely no drinking anywhere near my grandparents. It was always more fun on my mom's side...
As a parent, we all drank in front of my kids and they tuned out normal. Now we all drink in front of my granddaughter.
