I'm white and have been to 2 big family reunions for different branches of my family, the last one was in the 90's.

I think Ancestry.com probably made it so much easier for the relatives that were into ancestry that they didn't have to track down and call people like they used to, or get people together to figure out who's who.

Social Media also makes so many people stars of their own reality shows that getting together with the fam ain't as big of a deal as it used to be for anyone.

I would agree that Social Media is the downfall of these sort of things.

If I am wondering what's going on with a cousin I look on Facebook / insta, I don't need a yearly small talk event

Misc. image post with no link or references to the study. I'm sure it's about as scientific as 3 guys in a bar spewing opinions.

I have never been to one

I haven't been over there in a few years, but Stone Mountain Park's picnic grounds were wall-to-wall family reunions in the summer.

Same with white families I guess.

I'm from a very large family. We used to have reunions almost every year.. then every 3-5 years. Now none are planned. My dad is 81. Once my dad's generation of our family and all my aunts and uncles are no longer with us, we'll never have another reunion probably. All the family my age probably will never have one. The closeness with my cousins and all that just isn't there like it was with my dad and his eight siblings and people of that age.

We've had maybe 4 in the last 20 years. Last one was about 2 years ago.. over at Clarkco State Park near Meridian. Just wondering if anyone on here knows Clarkco..

Kinda sad and depressing about reunions tho. Think they're way down with all demographics.

We had one on my Dad’s side last month. We had one on my Mom’s around 10 years ago.

Do people still have family reunions? Most of my family is spread completely across the country. Just not practical

I'm white and the last reunion I attended was in 2013.

I don't think this is exclusive to just AA's.

I think you're right.
I think their families are getting more fragmented.

Whitey here, and I haven’t been to one on either side since at least 1990.

People have become more accustomed to separate from their families. I don’t speak to my mother nor have I for 10 years. I don’t care too. Too much baggage and she moved with new husband out of state. I don’t care what my uncle and his family are doing. I visit my dad often. We celebrate holidays and do the normal stuff. We are close.

I'm a white guy in my late 30s and remember annual family reunions as a kid, but other than weddings, there have been no other official family reunions since the mid to late 90s.

White guy 40s, same experience.

Last family reunions were in the mid 90s.

Was like 300 people.

Then the elders started getting to old to make it happen.

This seems like an American problem.

my extended family used to get together frequently, and always had a big reunion the weekend before Christmas every year

we would all have a wonderful time and catch up on everything in our lives, it was full of love, laughter, and great food and drink - but never politics or religion

then Facebook happened, and too many family members made it painfully clear where they stood on political matters all year round

and almost as if by magic, they stopped wanting to spend time with one another

other than funerals, we haven’t gotten together as a family since 2013

My wife's family used to get together in July and at Thanksgiving, but my MiL and all her sisters slowly passed away, and the family farm was sold. I miss the gatherings, especially the one at Thanksgiving (those ladies could cook), but with the farm gone, the gatherings are no more.
