Presidents who believed in UFOs (list not exhaustive)
Jimmy Carter (President 1977-1981): Reported seeing a bright UFO in Georgia in 1969, which he filed a report on in 1973. As president, he pledged to make all UFO information available to the public and included messages in the Voyager spacecraft's "Golden Records".
Ronald Reagan (President 1981-1989): Reported seeing a UFO in 1974 while flying over California. He frequently speculated about an "alien threat" in speeches to encourage global unity.
Bill Clinton (President 1993-2001): Confirmed in a 2014 interview that he had aides investigate Area 51 to ensure no alien bodies were stored there, and tasked an associate with looking into the Roswell incident.
Gerald Ford (President 1974-1977): While a Congressman in 1966, he pushed for congressional hearings on UFOs following sightings in Michigan.
Donald Trump (President 2017-2021): Stated he was briefed on UFOs, expressed skepticism but acknowledged their existence, and in 2026, pledged to release files on UFOs and extraterrestrial life.
Harry Truman (President 1945-1953): Had his military aide, Col. Robert Landry, provide regular briefings on UFO reports in the late 1940s and early 1950s
Other government officials (list not exhaustive)
Rep. Tim Burchett (TN-R): A vocal proponent of disclosure, claiming in 2026 to have seen evidence and received briefings on "extraterrestrial life" that he believed would "unglue" the country if released.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL-R): Claimed to have seen evidence of UAPs and expressed knowledge of "alien-human hybrid breeding programs" during a 2023 hearing.
Sen. Harry Reid (NV-D): Former Senate Majority Leader who was instrumental in securing funding for the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) and advocating for UFO study.
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (FL-D): A member of the UAP Caucus advocating for more transparency regarding what the government knows about UAPs.
John Podesta (White House Chief of Staff 1998-2001): Has long pushed for the release of UFO documents, famously noting on Twitter that his biggest failure in office was not securing UFO disclosure.
