re: Rec leagues for tiny kids are a waste of time.

My 18 month old drank a 12 oz Erdinger Dunkel and shot two coots Sunday morning. I was pretty proud until one of the coots turned out to be a morehen (only found out after my neighbor called dnr and got us a fat ticket). Now kind of wish he'd been playing travel ball or something instead...

My 5 year old isn't playing Y league basketball because we think its an efficient use of time.
She is playing because she has fun and enjoys playing with her friends.

No possible way to do this at 5.
Wut? Its not a permanent decision, but your kid will definitely tell you whether he likes playing that sport or not in that age range.

Let them run around aimlessly for a few hours a week. Yea they don’t keep score but so what. Go run around in circles. Better than playing video games.

I thank god every day my parents aren’t like most of you that here.

That’s insane. 5 yr olds don’t play sports. Maybe they don’t like the rando coach or the waiting in line to bat, or the concessions…but a 5 yr old deciding whether he likes or dislikes football, or baseball, or soccer, or golf is just nuts. I could see this at 9-10, but at half that age they may simply not like Bobby who keeps kicking them instead of the ball.

I had a blast coaching my 4 year old's summer soccer league. It was so fun. You're just laughing the whole time, they all chase after the ball, some sprint backwards to just be goalie, but it's about getting them involved. I bring them all in. One of the kids even gifted me a whistle after the season was over that said "World's Best Coach". I'll do it again in a heartbeat

Rec leagues are dead everywhere. There may be one here or there, but they are FEW and FAR between. Kids don't play outside any longer and develop skills for team sports. You have to pay to pay these days, sad but true.

I'm "coaching" my kid in the 3-4 age group. It's herding cats with balls and bats. Everybody knows that.
Piranha ball.

I really hope God made you sterile. My 4-yr old asks me almost everyday when her next soccer game is.
Can she keep score? nope.
Does she know which goal to score on? Sometimes.
Can she run without laughing so hard she falls down? not always.
Does she enjoy it? With zero hesitation, YES.

Wow. Impressive down votes that you got with this.

No wonder your kid became a kicker with a queer dad

Stick around for a minute TigerPaul and you will get well acquainted with Gaston and his trivial dilemmas as a father.

4-7 my kids were playing YMCA.

I was fortunate enough to live in a neighborhood with lots of kids my age and plenty of greenspace. At some point our parents just figured out it was a lot easier and cheaper to let us play outside all day and form our own games, teams, contests, etc. There's something magical and important about kids figuring this stuff out on their own instead of being micro-managed by adults.
This was back in the 80s too when the only two rules were: (1) change out of your school clothes and (2) be back for supper.

- Teaching a 3-4 year old baseball concepts is hard under any circumstances, it's going to be almost impossible without peers to engage with and watch
- Having done the small ball thing a while now, none of the dads drop their kids off, we're all in the field and in the dugout keeping things moving.
Most importantly, why do you care so much? You don't see us starting threads like "hey if you're a 50 year old guy having a mid-life crisis and you spend time obsessing over lowering Nissans and rims and selvedge jeans, that's a waste of time"

Just play with your damn kid and let them figure out the basics.
& then your kid becomes a kicker instead of a real football player

I did this one days I didn’t have practice or games. Organized sports are the best thing that’s readily available for kids.
