Random thought after watching the movie Oppenheimer

During that era you had the following physicists:
Robert Oppenheimer
Edward Teller
Albert Einstein
Max Planck
Werner Heisenberg
Niels Bohr
Richard Feynman
Enrico Fermi
Erwin Schrödinger
Contrast that with who we have today:
Stephen Hawking
The black science guy Neil degrasse Tyson (half joking)
Where are all the geniuses that are making advancements? The first group of guys made some incredible ground breaking discoveries. Everything seems to have stagnated other than smaller electronics and computer science.

You are correct
It’s because that science is a dead end pursuit.

String Theory is a dead end.

Hawking and Tyson are DEI hires.

I can have ChatGPT get an MBA for me…
We’ve had more practical discoveries lately, IMO. AI, battery powered cars, amazing computers in your pocket, getting anything you want in 2 days, taxis that are autonomous, etc are all really crazy and valuable stuff.

Commie sympathizer who had a legit commie brother and mistress, both of whom brought Russian spies into the circle.

The fact you didn't include Gross, Witten, Higgs, Penrose, and Thorne at the very least suggests you may not have much of a clue about modern physicists.

They are out there. We just don’t value them. Today, society/media focuses on celebrities. Singers, actors, athletes are who we tell kids to look up to instead of people doing real things that impact society. Musk is a rare exception and it’s only because he owns a media company and is the richest man in the world.

I know NOTHING about this but it was explained to me that String theory has so dominated the debate and it is more of a pop culture thing. And those guys are more concerned about celebrity than entertaining opposing views. So it’s stagnant. My guess is a lot of the more brilliant physicists toil in relative anonymity..

Physics in the 1970’s made a wrong turn towards String Theory. It doesn’t work, but they’ve invested so much time, money, and reputation into it that institutions refuse to admit that it’s a failure and pursue anything else after labeling all other rival theories as pseudoscience. All of the real advancements are being suppressed by our government and used by the secret space program and clandestine military programs.

The world was a little different then and the stakes were higher. They were working for their survival in world that was much tougher and more cut throat than now. They had real motivation.
Ease and comfort stifles creativity

There are tons of smart physicists working on big problems and Neil Degrasse Tyson is absofrickinglutely not one of them.
No respect for him.

Not physicists but there’s been guys like Steve Jobs, Elon, etc that have been incredibly impressive in what they have led their businesses to accomplish.

They’re all working on artificial intelligence and other IT technologies. Definitely not in politics.

Francis Fukuyama famously wrote that democracy and capitalism represent the end of history.
Well, in terms of physics, we have reached the end of discovery.
