Google maps is not the end all be all. It is basing that off of a road. That area in your picture is Cherokee County, NC. Cherokee County does not recognize it as having any local government per the Cherokee Chamber, and its not listed the US Census data. LINK
It’s a hamlet, not an incorporated city or village. In my home state, this is quite common.

It’s not-
California’s coastline (840 miles) is longer than Louisiana’s (397 miles).
Louisiana’s shoreline (7721 miles) is longer than California’s (3427 miles).
There’s a difference in how they are calculated. Shorelines include lakes, rivers… in addition to coastal land.

So... shoreline is essentially any land that borders any type of water, correct?

That’s my understanding

Well, it would have to be for Louisiana to have 7,700 miles of shoreline and Florida to have something like 8,500 miles.

This is according to NOAA:
But you are correct if you use the Congressional Research Service method, whatever that is.

According to a report by NOAA, Alaska has the longest coastline in the United States, with a length of 33,904 miles1. This is longer than all other states’ coastlines combined1.
Here is a table of the top 5 states with the longest coastlines in the United States:
quote:
Rank State Coastline Length (Miles)
1 Alaska 33,904
2 Florida 8,436
3 Louisiana 7,721
4 Maine 3,478
5 California 3,427

Correct, nice job
As a follow-up, since this is a geographic thread and all.. and i think this one’s a little easier- Which iconic 1970s classic rock song was recorded in Bogalusa La ?

Alaska has the most North, West and Eastern point in the USA.
Correct, but not really true. That's only due to where they decided to start counting the Meridians. If it was truly true, you couldn't travel east from that Easternmost point and hit more of America.
Edit: But since this thread is trivia, I'll allow it.

This made me look on google maps. There are several towns along the coast in the southern part of Namibia.
