it will be deep blue if you live in chappel hill or close to one of the universities there. Other than those areas it is fairly conservative if you ask me. I moved from BR to Raleigh about a year and a half ago. we really like it here and there are tons of outdoor activities to do. If you have kids that will be in school, the schools here are light years better than schools in Louisiana.
As others mentioned the housing market is getting a little pricey but everything else is comparable to Louisiana.

Lived in a few spots in the Raleigh Durham area for about 7 years. It's my favorite place I've ever lived with the exception of 4 years of college in Athens (but that shouldn't count).
Cost of living is decent, can be expensive in the hot neighborhoods, but also lots of easily accessible suburban and rural areas if that's your thing.
Regarding the cultural and political climate, the area is the most educated per capital region in the US. While geographically in the South, the research institutions, tech companies, etc contribute to a more metropolitan feel. The state as a whole has a great mix of ideologies, but if you are looking for uniformity of conservative thought, you may be disappointed.

I loved living in Cary way back in the early 00's
Great park system with an awesome system of greenways that connected to a huge park by the airport.
Very good schools and easy access to the city

Never once hit traffic when I was there. By traffic, I mean BR and NO traffic

Traffic in that area is notoriously bad because of the rapid growth.

If that's where Andy and Barney went to party then I'm down with Raleigh!

Traffic is bad during rush hour, but no where near the level of Charlotte. Rest of the time it’s easy to get around anywhere in the city. I love Raleigh. Been here 20 years and it’s grown a lot in that time and is still growing fast, which is my worry. I’m afraid it won’t be too much longer before the scale tips over to an over crowded city. I have I540 right outside my neighborhood, and a big horse farm that has rodeos every Tuesday night during the summer, plus a greenway with trails that run all through the city. Where else can you get that inside the city limits.

quote:You’re looking at a place among a bunch of universities. There’s plenty of non conservatives around. The governor is a Democrat. It’s a nice area to live. If you have a family you’ll probably be living outside of Raleigh. I wouldn’t worry about not fitting in. It’s still a southern city aside from all of the midwesterners moving in.
Politically I'm libertarian. I am curious about the culture - I'm not one who lives and dies by politics, but if it is deep blue hard core country that could be a little awkward.

Super strong economy, rapid growth, lots of yankees, great airport, great roads, lots of traffic, ACC central, New Yorkers abound, centrally located between hills and beach, Italian Americans, nice farmer's market, safe downtown, RTP, lots of wealth, trendy bar scene, William Umstead Park..etc
