I'm looking at a possible relocation to the Raleigh/Durham area in NC. I've always loved visiting NC, further West though (Blue Ridge Mountains). Anyone have feedback on the area? Real estate market, what areas are desirable or not, etc.

I spent a decent amount of time working in that area and always enjoyed Raleigh. It's has far less of a Southern feel that the western parts of the state to me.

Cary and Apex are nice suburbs if that's your style.

From Baton Rouge?

What feedback do you need? This is your big break to leave one of the worst cities in the lower 48.

I currently live about 30 mins from Raleigh and we absolutely love it. I live in Fuquay Varina which is just south of Raleigh. This area is booming. Economy is great and the people are great.

Apex is considered the best city to live in, with Cary, Holly Springs, and Fuquay Varina following. Food is awesome, you have sports galore with Duke, NC State, UNC, and Charlotte down the road.

I am from St. Amant and I’ve always wanted to move back home after I retire, but now we are settling here.

Only thing that sucks is the bigger cost of living in Wake County. I don’t know how flexible your desire for a commute is but I live in Harnett county and the houses/utilities are far cheaper. Regardless the housing market is comparable or cheaper than most big city areas.

Moved to the area from BR a few months ago... Great area, lots to do. Better than BR. Real estate can get pricey depending on where you are looking.

It's an awesome city. A couple hours to mountains or the beach. Awesome food, bars, etc. Sorry they don't have enough white supremacy rallies for you.

Politically I'm libertarian. I am curious about the culture - I'm not one who lives and dies by politics, but if it is deep blue hard core country that could be a little awkward.

What are the best elementary schools? Is public an option?

Yes from Baton Rouge. I've lived elsewhere before and am very open to other areas. Moving is such a PITA though. Don't want to do it just to do it.

Kids are grown, so not worried about schools so much other than how they impact purchase/resale values.

This makes no sense because most everyone I meet around here is a conservative. Now granted I don’t hang out in the city much, but living 30 mins away I get my fair share of interactions.

I’d just stay clear of the uppity areas like Willow Springs and the Raleigh side of Holly Springs. If anything you have a ton of snobs but they’re easy to avoid.

I’d strongly suggest Fuquay Varina... Commute is about 30 mins to Raleigh, little more to Durham. Small town, cozy feel with a great atmosphere.

Do you feel like you had any trouble fitting in? Louisiana culture can rub some people the wrong way. I'm used to talking to strangers when I'm out and about and know that doesn't always go over well.

Nope, not at all. Granted I moved here from Tacoma, WA haha.

If you don’t mind the commute I’d recommend moving to a more country part like Fuquay. I work on Ft Bragg near Fayetteville and make that commute and absolutely love where we live.

You’ll run into your fair share of snobs like I said, but for the most part it is the south and you shouldn’t have an issue fitting in. I didn’t.

Clean lots of cookie cutter homes. It was nice to visit but i like sourthern food more. Cant remember the name, but you can get draft beer while you buy groceries!
