I was acting 11b straight out of high school. Never saw combat but trained for it. I would never tell anyone I saw combat. Just a pride thing with me. I did training but never used it

Dad spent 1969 in Vietnam, after doing ROTC at LSU. Never spoke of it when I was growing up. Now that he is in his 80s, actually talks about his experience. He was imbedded in an ARVN unit. As the only American, he called in artillery and air strikes when they engaged the enemy. Prolly feels a bit guilty. Little bro served in Afghanistan and Iraq w 82nd Airborne. Gets a PTSD check, while working 50 hrs a week as a NP. He never talks about his experience either.The guys who wear the Vietnam Veteran hats were prolly REMFs.

I served during peacetime. I’m totally fine with not having went to war. I consider myself fortunate. Some of the guys I served with were killed in Iraq a few years later.

I’m a Desert Shield/ Desert Storm veteran who was over there almost from day one, all the way until the end.
You should be as proud as anyone. You put on the uniform and you knew the risks. You’d have done whatever duty you were called on to do.
For what it’s worth, I don’t park in the veterans spots in businesses that offer them, etc. Everyone thinks they could have done more. It doesn’t diminish what they did.

What about guys who served a few years but jump at every opportunity for free or discounted things for veterans.
Not combat vets but just served active duty for 4 years or less.
Outside looking in this just doesn’t feel right. But I’m not one to say. Curious if actual vets have thoughts on this

Certainly doesn't bother me; nobody has ever asked me to see my DD214 to verify my CIB for a discount. Anyone who served can shop at the AAFES store online; you just get verified to have served, and you have the rights to shop like any veteran from a REMF to Audie Murphy. The 90+% that never see combat are just as much a part of the war machine as the tip of the spear.

When we enlisted we knew what could be asked of us and we voluntarily raised our right hands. We were willing to do what was asked of us…….thankfully we were spared that terrible experience.
Me as well. I had the most boring military service known to man. Really really unremarkable. But I signed the same check as everyone else. Ours never got cashed. We served in a strangely long period of peace

Strangely enough, I have a close friend that had some close quarter kills and he can tell you exactly what each person was doing when he shot them. But the rest he chalks up to artillery, helicopters and jet pilots.
He and I and a few others were on vet duck hunt in Jan and we had our spot taken by some guys posing as vets. When questioned about unit, MOS, etc they picked up their stuff and left. That pissed us off.

Most stolen valor people are so obviously full of shite, whether it’s a patently false tall tale or a jacked-up uniform. Pretty easy to tell. What I find just as irritating is movies and tv shows where they get uniforms wrong, medals are screwed up, salutes are terrible, customs are botched, etc, etc.

Watched a reality Show with a Vietnam Vet . It seemed like he was kind of bragging then he said he was in the navy and a cook on a ship. Kind of lost respect for him from there.

For anyone wondering.... Anyone who brags about doing the really cool shite is lying. Snipers don't brag. Operators don't brag. They know what they did and don't brag about it.
There's all kinds of stolen valor though. Even some people who served in the military are guilty. There are some people who never saw combat who will lead people to believe they were in the shite every day.
