A guy I went to high school and hung around with some joined the Navy shortly after I did.
Afterwards we would run into each other occasionally and talk “Navy stories”
After awhile I start hearing from other classmates that he was telling these tall tales about being a Marine Corp sniper,how many Viet Cong he killed etc.His daughter came to work at hospital I worked at and she was saying the same thing so he was lying to his own children.
Crazy thing is he was in the Brown Water Navy patrolling rivers in Viet Nam which was dangerous as hell,they got into some pretty heavy combat.
I called him out on it and his story was the Marine Corps brass heard stories about what a good shot he was so they pulled strings to have him transferred to the M.C as a sniper.
Stupid for him to try and tell me such bullshite,I-knew it doesn’t work like that.He would have had to complete his enlistment in the Navy and then join the M.C,go through their bootcamp and apply for sniper training.
Later on his son joined the M.C,I ran into him one day and asked about his son,told me he was a Sgt.Major embedded in Syria calling in air strikes against Al-Queda.
I googled his son,he was indeed a Sgt Major but he was the Command S.M.for a Marine Corps air wing in Arizona.Pretty impressive accomlishment for his son.
I have always been curious if his son in the MC found out the truth about his dad.

OIF vet here but same, I never mention my time in Iraq 2006. Never seen combat and people rarely know I’m a Marine reserve vet 2003-2009

I did some cool stuff. It is what it is but to brag about killing people and not even serve is pretty F’ed up.

Similarly, most people I have talked to about it have no actual clue if they killed anyone. They always say fighting took place 100+ yards out and they were just dumping rounds. One buddy did say he melted the barrel off of a roof mounted machine gun on a humvee.
Those were young beer around the fire stories. I've learned to thank people for their service and don't bring it up unless they want to bring it up. There's always one drunk idiot asking if they've killed people though.

Well I mean technically most ship commanding officers are commanders, but they're called captain if they hold the command at sea pin. so captain crunch could technically be a commander. i know... i nuked it out

Honestly, never really bothers me. People lie about all sorts of things. It is different if they are using it to commit fraud and separate good people from their money, but telling tall tales and walking around in a cartoon uniform doesn't move my needle at all. They almost always have the order of precedence screwed up with their ribbons and stuff sewn and pinned all over their uniform like a kid putting stickers on a GI Joe.

Doesn’t really bother me. I find most of us tell stories about funny things that happened along the way, not the heavy stuff.
I’ve got a cousin, he went Guard and fixed helicopters. Deployed once to Kuwait and is forever telling stories of killing and combat. The two combat vets and me just ignore him and talk about something else or get back to the old branch vs other branches shenanigans…BTW, sorry you weren’t smart enough for the Air Force…
