Question for the Veterans

Is there anything more despicable than stolen valor? Had a guy at work bragging once about how many men he killed in Iraq when he was a sniper. He would fascinate the younger guys with his stories and he was quite good at spinning tales. Only trouble was, he never served a day in the military.
I had the honor of serving with actual Vietnam veterans, men who endured the horrors of a jungle war, while half their country considered them baby-killers and villains. These guys didn't care to talk about the things that happen in war, the things that they wanted to bury deep inside their souls so their loved ones didn't have to know what they went through.
My take on it, was: if you talk about it as though it was grandiose and good times, chances are you're either exaggerating or you're outright lying. I may be wrong, but that's my opinion.

We didn't have any snipers getting lots of kills when I was in Iraq. Most of them came from people being run over by our vehicles. If cars or trucks wouldn't get out of the way on the highways they would just be shot/run over. Begining of war.

People like to tell tall tales.
Most of the guys, and gals, never left the base deployed. Admittedly, that didn't mean it's a walk in the park but the vast majority of military never takes a life. For every story about some person killed is hundreds of people who work behind the scenes and make sure our people come home.
As for the stolen valor.....just a whole bunch of idiots. I hate them but ultimately they're allowed to make up as much shite as they want. I've seen more people embellish their own service and that frustrates me just as much. You already signed and made sacrifices, who are you trying to impress?

I stole valor once in a bar to get laid. Felt bad about it afterwards. Never did it again.
I don’t drink so felt awkward and experimented with making up stories to fool idiots. No heroic tales, honestly wanted drunk chicks to leave me alone but it worked the opposite way.

Agree totally, but some people would rather tell a lie than the truth. I hate a liar, especially when it comes to service of the country.
I'm a Desert Storm "veteran" that didn't even leave the states and saw zero combat. I don't even feel worthy of standing up at events when veterans are called out.

It's kind of sad and pathetic, but there are things more despicable. It's not even illegal unless the person is trying to gain some kind of tangible benefits. I also don't like the guys going around trying to bust the stolen valor guys. They assume everybody is guilty until proven innocent. It's not their call.

There's a website for SOF veterans where a guy who had honorably served in combat with the 75th Ranger Regiment claimed he was going back to Iraq as a contractor. He got a lot of attaboys and even some material support. Turns out he never left the states. Why did he do that when there was no need to? I guess some people are just broken inside.. .

Yes, that's annoying.
What's also anoying is how watered down the milltary made the awards. Literally everyone I delpoyed with E6 and above got one.

I dont have a single military item displayed at my home nor my office. I fly an American flag and I carry my most cherished military coin in my wallet.

That is your first clue that the guy was full of shite.
I grew up being surrounded by World War II, Korea, and Vietnam War veterans. They'd tell me some crazy and funny stories from their time in the service, but never talked about what they saw in combat.

I feel your pain...I volunteered while a senior in high school and was in basic training 2 weeks after graduation. Vietnam was nearing its' end so I was considered a Vietnam Era Veteran. I've never felt worthy of even using that term. I wouldn't want folks to think I'm trying to make myself something I'm not. I did serve with veterans who came out of Vietnam and these guys were genuine heroes to me. My years in the army were some of the best years of my life. Wish I could do it all again.

I’m in the same boat brother, but there seems to be less and less who are even willing to put on the uniform.
When we enlisted we knew what could be asked of us and we voluntarily raised our right hands. We were willing to do what was asked of us…….thankfully we were spared that terrible experience.

I don't think I consider them cowards, though they certainly should have more stamina than what they've displayed. You think the world war 2 vets wanted to come home after 5 or 6 months? Thank God, these sailors weren't there!
