I coach my 4yo’s 4-5 year old rec t-ball team (undefeated on the year, all ties…. subtle brag) and at last night’s game, a kid hit a pop-up and miraculously one of the defenders caught it. I say miraculously because typically they’re getting hit in the face or all piling on top of each other for a ground ball. Anyway as with I assume most t-ball leagues, we play 3-4 innings where everyone hits once per inning. These are kids that can barely hold a bat right or field a ball (without a miracle). I mentioned to someone at work that a kid caught one and how cool it was to see kids progress and everyone cheered (both sides). He asked if the batter was out and sent to the dugout. I said no because there are no outs or runs and at that age, the biggest thing is trying to hammer home fundamentals. The more reps (at bats, balls fielded, bases ran), the better. His response was “pfft, that’s the pussification of America, he should be taught what it feels like to be out and fail”. I didn’t want to argue with him so I just dropped it. I’m all about competition once kids can actually perform on the field (catch, hit, throw, etc) but at this point, it’s all about learning in my opinion. Reps reps reps…

So I submit to the venerable OT: is letting kids at that age play without outs the pussifiaiton of America?

4-5 year olds have been giant pussies ever since we stopped letting them work in the coal mines.

our travel t-ball league uses outs. we also only accept the most elite 4-5 yo's.

It's been that way for that age group for quite a while, hasn't it? Other dude probably doesn't have kids.

For 4-5 year olds it's fine to not have outs. Once they have some sort of skill level, outs should count and there should be a winning team and a losing team

our t ball, generally we'll sit down the outs. there have been times playing against some younger kids that we'd let some stay on base etc... really doesn't bother me at all either way.

a pop up catch in t ball, you drag that hitter back into the dugout where he/she belongs! lol

We have a few good kids and have had some legit 3 out innings within 4-5 batters. We just keep going until everyone bats and rounds the bases.

We tried to play an inning of regular baseball and one of the other teams' coaches got pissy so we just went to regular rules.

Pretty sure this is how T-ball has been played for as long as I can remember.

Do they even understand the rules at that age?

My nephew told me that when my 4 year old niece plays t-ball all that ends up happening is they run around and tackle the person with the ball.

Do you take the ones that might not be elite but know the difference between accept and except?

Of course not. They're 5 year olds. At some point, you can debate when, they should transition to keeping score. But still everyone should get equal playing time.

It should stay that way until middle school except for select leagues.

The real pussification is this

quote:

everyone cheered (both sides)

Who cheers against there own kid? This would never happen in the travel ball league my 3yo places in

Im in your same shoes. Get the reps in now, rules will come in later. At this age they're more interested in the after-game snack than being on the field.

No. It's always been that way. I used to umpire in high school. Outs start in tee-ball.

I'm trying to remember what it was like when I was that small and played bitty ball soccer. I think they still kept score and there were winners and losers, but most kids didn't know if they won or lost anyway.

At some point, kids need to start learning that you don't always win at everything all the time. The debate begins when trying to figure out what age that is.
