don't understand how that is racist but damn if that ain't fricked up.

I can't imagine having guests over and not even offering them dinner and just like stay upstairs and wait 30 minutes.

But the Dutch (from the reply) are definitely a country that gets the biggest pass from most people on their shitty past. They were basically the first country to do the triangle slave trade. Treated people like shite in indonesia, south america, and africa. They were the last country in Europe to ban slavery, etc. I feel like they get a pass because how they got fricked over in both world wars...but the Belgians and the Dutch definitely deserve as much shite as the British and Americans get.

So people who don't live in Sweden are upset over a Swedish custom.

Karenism.

I went to that and started looking at the hashtag and it was wildly hilarious. I do enjoy the world finding out that there are other people that are racist other than just America or that slavery and colonialism existed before 1619.

This was one of my favorites:

American whites deserve all the slander they get but #Swedengate has shown this is another reason why I will stay my arse in America. I been in spots filled with Confederate flags and guns and they still offered a plate hahahahaha

German tradition too. Thjs began long before there were slaves from Africa, but Africans were capturing slaves in Europe to bring back to Africa

So the custom is to not invite guests to dine? Interested in how that came to be.

Funny, aren't these the people that want us to be just like the Scandinavian countries with their welfare states?

If Swedes do this to other Swedes, how is it racist?

They're white. That makes them racist by default.

Well damn, that is pretty wild. The poor kid can't even get a piece of bread or something

I understand you are not obligated to feed your children's friends. But, it feels wrong not to, at least for me.

Dutch folks seeing #Swedengate on day 2 and hoping the world doesn’t rediscover the whole Christmas blackface “tradition”

Except that’s a total load of bs.

First, it’s not even a Christmas “tradition”, it’s for their celebration of Sinterklaas which is celebrated on the evening of December 5th. The whole festival leading up to it lasts a week from the arrival of Sinterklaas by boat on his white horse. While many seem to have twisted the festival into being Santa Claus, for Dutch people, at least when I lived there, it was two totally different and distinct holidays.

Secondly, the 2 black faced people accompanying Sinterklaas, Zwarte Piet, were in fact originally symbols representing the 2 ravens always seen with St. Nicholas.

shite like the thread on Twitter simply shows how alternative history begins.

Context is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is that they are in blackface, therefore racist.

Facts. Pretty sure it’s just a Germanic thing. Netherlands, Denmark, northern Germany etc. Hard to explain exactly, but I understand completely what you are saying.

Because the person that originally posted it is a black immigrant to Sweden, so of course everyone assumed it was racial.

This is so hilariously sad and true. We live in a clown world where context doesn't matter at all, the only thing that matters is how someone feels when they see/hear something, even if they are completely misinformed or being irrational.

My friend took at vacation to Sweden a few years ago. At a tavern, he offered to pay for one of the rounds at the table. All the Swedes looked at each other totally confused.

The idea of "buying a round" was totally foreign to them. They all were in the habit of paying individually.

One of the recent things I have heard from a co-worker, who, while normal, IS a higher-up in an accrediting agency for schools and colleges : "It's not the intention, it's the impact."

Therefore, it is the prerogative of the hearer/receiver, as to what something means and how it's harmful.
