LumenAid solar powered lamp and phone charger. Stores flat like a book, twist to inflate. Lamp $25; model with the phone charger, $50; best 100 hour model charges 2-3 phones $75.

Please suggest any other items you would add to hurricane or camping gear. Food, water, flashlights, lamps, etc. are a given. I think of Poptarts as a version of Hobbit elves' lembas bread.

How well does it actually work? We got a solar powered flashlight/phone charger that we used for the last hurricane and it was ok, but nothing fantastic. Are these tiny solar panels (presumably Chinese made) actually any good?

No one lives in Louisiana to experience hurricanes anymore. They’re in Texas now and only god can help them when it gets cold again.

I bought 10 solar powered lights that have a low setting, a motion sensor setting, and a high setting. Set up a few on the motion sensor setting in the bathroom, right outside by the door, and by the generator. I also set up a couple on low for the kids at night.

This Beston lantern with charging capabilities is very handy.

Also have this Goal Zero Sherpa power bank.

Rechargeable battery lanterns may be fine for a very short power outage but only last about 5 hours without recharge. Electric grid can be down for weeks as we have painfully learned.

My Ryobi led flash light that came with my battery tool set was used daily and the battery lasted the whole week without charging

I keep a UPS on my TV equipment and a separate one for my internet equipment. During the storm it’s helpful to keep your equipment from constantly recycling with every power drop. Once the power is down for good it will keep my internet up for a while. I turn off the one for TV equipment and disconnect that stuff. I can get a couple days phone/tablet charge out of it. After that I could bring it to the office to recharge. Fortunately I haven’t needed to yet.

If you have to put food in an ice chest.. save your used gallon size zip lock bags. Wash them out and put water in them half way and lay flat in your freezer. Having a 2nd freezer helps. It takes a longer time for it to melt.

I picked one up like this one at Lowes for $30.00. Takes 3 AA batteries that are still good after 7 days of use. I used it from sundown till I went to bed..

I charged them with my generator and ran them at night to free up load to power other items.

That's what I do. I bought some solar outdoor pathway lights. At night we bring them in and place them upside down on the floor and on counters to give some nice light throughout the house.
