Would prefer he file a bill to build more power generation capacity.

And people really think EV's are the future... we can't even run our HVACs without causing issues to the grid... lets add 150 million EV chargers
Seeing more and more storage systems to divert usage to off peak hours. Like the tesla megapack battery storage system, or ice storage systems or even large tanks to store chilled water made at night.

But I’ll never have a smart thermostat. The old fashioned works just fine.
If by “fine” you mean requiring you to walk up to it to physically change it every time. I’m a pretty big fan of being able to adjust mine without having to get out of bed
Jokes aside, the “smart” thing is overblown. On the off chance a bill that mandates utility control does pass in the future 1. All you have to do is disconnect the thermostat from the wifi for it to become an “old fashioned” thermostat and 2. The utility would probably come to your house and install their own proprietary thermostat that you can’t lock out anyway.
I don’t understand the logic of making life less pleasant for decades in a futile attempt to fight against the above scenario.

yes I get charged a small fee which I gladly pay

Oh, I can understand that. I’m just old and don’t get into the smart home stuff. Maybe eventually!

I was fine with the fee, too. But my ex allowed them to come switch it out when I was at work even after I said I wanted to stay with the regular meter.

A WiFi enabled thermostat is genuinely a game changer. I actually turn off all the “smart learning” nonsense. I did a very basic schedule that cuts off the ac before I need to get up during the summer and turns on the heater before I need to get up in the winter. If I want to change it outside of that, I just pull out my phone, tap one app, and am essentially looking at a normal thermostat display. And heaven forbid I lose my phone, I can adjust it manually at the device. It’s just all around a better experience

“the internet of things” is going to have to do whatever it does without me

Years ago Austin Energy had a big promotion and was offering free programmable thermostats and would even come install them. Most people didn’t read the fine print in the agreement which allowed AE to control them if needed. Suckers….
With that said, people should be controlled somewhat. When it’s 100 degrees outside, 76-78 degrees should be plenty with a fan going. People don’t need their ACs to be on 65-70 degrees. They should be forced to lose weight first.

That Rep wants to get his arse beat

Mess with my heat when it's cold? No problem. Not right, but I'll deal.
Turn off my A/C when it's hot? I'll kill you.
Maybe they're trying to bait us into going solar and off grid, because I'd be adding Tesla solar shingles and powerwalls...and a big arse, loud diesel generator just for shits and giggles.

If they try that BS I would have no issue buying a couple of window units.

This reminds me of the idiots on Nextdoor rejoicing that Entergy is “giving away free smart thermostats” without an ounce of critical thought of the potential to take control of that device

Ok, Mr. Ohio, if you control my AC, I'm allowed to cut off your heater in the dead of winter.
