Too careless with his opponents to make it in WWE imo but a lot of fun to watch.
Which is kind of surprising because he comes from a wrestling family. He had good, legit training. Some of those ECW guys just fell into that style and couldn't seem to work any other way. I think part of it is what the fans demanded. If they couldn't shake the brawler/extreme image they didn't have much of a chance in WWF/E during that time. Mick made it, but he had kind of formed a balance over the years. It didn't hurt that he fit well into the Attitude Era from a storyline perspective.

His uncle would tape razors to his fingers to cut his opponent if the opponent didn’t want to blade. I’m not saying the opponent didn’t know how….the opponent did not want to bleed…….

He was still wrestling as of April this year?

I know The Shiek was that way, but those guys from that camp had legit wrestling training. Hell, Dean Malenko trained with a bunch of the same guys.

Dude was an underground legend in the 90s before ECW took off when tape trading was a thing.
He honestly legit might be the last great magazine made superstar - because most of us had no idea who he was* except for the crazy things they said about him in the Apter mags.
*unless we had late night access to ECW

I’ve never been into wrestling but I did watch a few of his hardcore matches with ECW. The guy must have the highest pain tolerance with the shite that has been done to him. One match I remember he got caught up in barbed wire.

Foley also worked in WWE because he was careful about not hurting guys, while willing to take an insane amount of damage.
The fact that Foley took all of that abuse and never had an issue with pain pills is quite impressive.
RvD was imo the most polished of the guys who made their name in ECW, and he had a lot of success in WWE, but I think a lot of wrestlers were annoyed at the risks he took in the ring.

Sabu vs Funk barbed wire match was one of the greatest of all time.

Damn, didn't realize he was that young.

There are those who say it was TOO EXTREME, even for ECW.

November to Remember 1998 @ UNO. I kept a piece of a table he put RVD through.

I grew up on early ‘80’s Mid South. I watched early 90’s ECW every week. Had I seen ECW as a 12 year old my head would have exploded.

Both Sabu and RVD are the best wrestlers I have ever seen. They did things that seemed impossible. I was glued to their matches and they outdid themselves all the time.
ECW was the bomb. It got me back into wrestling when I was in my late teens. I thought ECW was going to eventually take over WWE similar to UFC and boxing. WWE had the deep pockets and purged wrestler after wrestler. I am sure there were other factors as well.
My favorite line was Jerry Styles saying "OHHH MMYYY GOOOOODDD!!!!!!" after every crazy stunt.

That’s why they didn’t allow 12 year olds at most of their shows lol… you had to be 15 or 18

Wcw had deep pockets as well if nor deeper. ECWs biggest downfall was itself. With it being extreme, advertising was even more limited than what wrestling normally gets so that means networks wouldn't really want it. I know they got that TNN deal but they were just the test subject for the network to get WWE. They could probably have gotten another TV deal had they simply been able to hang on for a few more months. The ECW brand was actually in better 'shape to get picked up over the WCW brand (I know WWE owned WCW and ECW but at the time ECW would have gotten a deal easier hence why it was brought back in 07/08).
Another issue was Heyman. He was terrible with handling money and there rumors that he gambled a lot and that's where some money went.

I remember an shoot interview with Sabu where he was asked which wrestler he liked working with least. He immediately mentioned the Sandman, and then said it wasn't because there was any real-life heat between them. It was because Jim Fullington/Sandman was always loaded and couldn't get the spots right.
Still, the Stairway to Hell match between those two was epic. My favorite "Oh My God!" was when Sandman climbed the ladder and Sabu knocked it over. Sandman fell 12'+ to the unpadded concrete floor.
RiP

Heyman had turned over the profit centers of the company to various groups in order to keep running, which in turn limited its long term viability.
In general, you don’t make a profit on the tickets, you try to break even there. You want to make money off the merchandise sales at the shows and, IIRC, Tommy Dreamer has been given that concession in lieu of a bunch of money Heyman owed him.

Botchamania has one of Sandman’s matches somewhere in which he got knocked goofy and kept kicking out of the finish. I want to say it was the time Foley accidentally brained him with a cast iron skillet, thinking it was one of the cheap aluminum pots the fans usually brought to the arena.

He was just on Legion of Skanks last week:
