20 years ago diesel was cheaper than gasoline. It changes over time.
The supply & demand intricacies of gasoline and diesel are fairly complicated because a barrel of oil will produce both, so it’s not like a refinery can just turn the diesel knob up and turn the gasoline knob down. (They actually can shift output to some extent, but it’s not as simple as you might think.)
This means that the supply side is effectively linked between the two. But the demand side is not as closely linked.
Since the COVID shutdowns, distillate (read: diesel) inventories have been falling while gasoline inventories have been relatively steady. The way I interpret this, it seems refinery outputs have been increasing primarily with gasoline demand, while diesel demand came back at a faster pace. This makes sense logically - freight traffic came back faster than commuter traffic.
The massive change during the shutdowns probably threw the whole supply equilibrium out of whack, and it’ll likely continue to become more lopsided until either A) the demands for gasoline and diesel level off at pre-COVID levels (relative to each other that is) or B) refineries adjust to the new demand balance. Either way is likely to take some time.

Red dye isn’t taxed at all.

Money, what do big trucks run on? Who owns most big trucks?
With the amount of fuel bought by mega carriers to haul everything around the country, prices are higher because they can and they want the money.
What will stop them? The trucks won't stop moving hauling. Sure there was a small convoy. I say small because the owner operators who are willing to strike are a tiny percentage of the overall amount of trucks on the road.

Never really thought about that.
I just remembered watching people in Africa making Diesel fuel in open fire pits in Nigeria.
Figured it was cheap to make if you could refine it without a refinery.

The interesting thing, and I haven’t actually looked in awhile, is that diesel used to be cheaper in Europe because it burns cleaner ( I was told) so they had it for less? As in, you’d think the greenies would prefer it?
It used to be cheaper here, too. When I was in High School, I drove a diesel car for my pizza delivery job. I was paying less for fuel and getting better mileage than the guys driving cars with gasoline engines. I think that all flipped in the early 90s.

Shorts are messing with things at the moment along with declining crude prices.
Some baws bet on diesel going down.

Demand is up, supply is down, you are welcome.

It does not have the final Federal Highway Taxes added, believe you me it is taxed plenty along the way, a very large distinction.

Trump was artificially keeping prices low at the expense of American businesses to keep his poll numbers high using tariffs and lining is buddy’s pockets. Thankfully him and his fascist administration are gone. Biden is building back better putting America first. He even released some of our strategic reserve to help Americans with the high prices. Now Elon wants to undo all this good by letting Trump and his radical followers back on Twitter and back into the media. Keep that toxic evil out of our country. A few extra dollars at the pump isn’t a big deal. Those whining about it are just greedy or don’t understand. It helps American businesses and it helps American workers. If we can get the green energy legislation passed it won’t matter anyway because we’ll get off of our pathetic reliance on ancient methods like fossil fuel
Lol…there’s no way you’re real. Thanks for the laugh.

No the Added dye makes it cheaper

Every year diesel goes up during the winter bc of home heating oil demand. Add in the oil price thing and demand, and it is just worse this year.
The govt's hardon for ULSD has not helped either.

Most of what gas/diesel was bought months back at cheap futures. I don’t believe we have even seen the biggest rise yet. When oil companies start buying the ridiculous price of Brent crude over $100 for a long term prices will only go up even more. Hydrogen, steam, electricity, all of which is needed in refineries is more costly as well. Not to mention FJB wanting green energy and the amount of taxes, sanctions, laws, frozen leases in the gulf, etc only adds to the cost
