Praxis exam no longer requirement for teachers in Louisiana

Been awhile since a hood teacher bash thread
quote:
Louisiana state officials have voted to change the requirements in place to become a teacher.
Gov. John Bel Edwards signed House Bill 546 into law on June 18. The law means people no longer have to take the Praxis Core Exam to enter into teacher preparation programs. Teachers would be allowed to teach if they have a bachelor’s degree, are willing to take a content test and are willing to enroll in prep programs.
Former educator for Claiborne Parish Schools, and now lawyer, Rashid Young said the law is a game-changer.

“I got a bachelor’s degree in business but wanted to go into education, so I needed to get into an alternative certification program. To get into the alt. cert. program, you either take the Praxis One Core Exam or there were two exceptions, which are if you made a 22 on the ACT or have a master’s degree,” he said.
Lafrance Cooper currently teaches for Claiborne schools. He said it took him several attempts to pass the Praxis, and that he knows several others who couldn’t pass and moved on to other careers.
“You are basically getting sub pay or you’re doing the same work as teachers but you can’t get the incentives or same pay the teachers are getting,” he said.
Back in March, the Louisiana Department of Education reported nearly 3,000 staffing vacancies. Young said this law will hopefully bring in new teachers.

So that guy couldn't make a 22 on the ACT and is happy that teachers will be even less qualified lol

So LA is at the bottom in education, yet we are lowering teachers’ standards?

No wonder our states education department is so dam bad. Letting people with this average of a ACT score walk into teaching without qualifications is absurd

They are almost looking for warm bodies at this point, and that’s not an exaggeration.

22 is LOW HANGING FRUIT.
Most teachers are just bad babysitters anyway. They could make just as much money running a 6 pack daycare out of their house but they aren't good enough to pull that off.
There are some good teachers, but few and far between. It doesn't improve when you get to college either.

There are 7th graders with an ACT score higher than 22. We're letting these people teach our kids

Think about the people you know who became secondary education teachers. I know one that is brilliant. I know about 2 who are smart. I know roughly 10 who are average or below.

I like it when we lower standards so people can get a job makes complete sense.

Yeah, y’all keep laughing at Louisiana teachers, but the guy who couldn’t make a 22 on his ACT is now a lawyer.

BIPOC but not Asians, Middle Easterners, bisexual, gay, lesbian, queer, trans, or Hispanic
Who does that leave?

CSB:
I wanted to change the world after graduating from LSU ‘08.
Wanted to teach inner city.
Went to Woodlawn to take my Praxis (waiver for ACT score was not in place at the time).
Tests are supposed to start at 8. Old woman is monitoring the class. I think she says “open your books and begin”, but apparently she said “sign in”. At 8:20, I look up and it’s me and one dude who are jotting stuff down. She gets on her walkie talkie, and two cops come in to escort me and this dude out.
I’m like, “wtf”? They say we’re just doing what we’re told, and bring us to the principal’s office. She starts scolding us, and telling us we’ll have to retake the test in 3 months. I tell her she’s nuts, I wasn’t cheating, just couldn’t hear the old hag. She says that’s not what she was told. I tell her to frick off. I’m then forcefully escorted off campus.
I then call the Praxis people, they tell me to go up there for noon. I go up there, and am met with a police presence. Praxis reps and I are on the phone, and they’re on the phone with principal. I was told if I apologize to principal, she’ll let me sit for second part, in which I would take both parts of praxis. After everyone else enters, it’s her, I, and the police. I apologize to her. She said, “I’ve heard what you’ve said. I don’t accept. Get off my campus”.
Still ended up teaching one whole semester of HS, but in OK, before I ended my career in education.

To be fair this is misleading and there is a lot of confusion in this. Teachers still have to pass 2 of the 3 Praxis test to be a certified teacher. They took out the praxis for your content area. But the other 2 you still have to pass

I had a high enough ACT score to skip the Praxis 1, but I took both social studies praxis tests, both English praxis tests, and the praxis PLT. Passed them all easily on the first try. They’re not that hard and anybody teaching your kids should be able to pass them. Louisiana is trying to put unqualified teachers in those roles instead of paying the good teachers out there. I left education a few years ago because I like to be able to buy groceries.

Isn’t a 20 the minimum to just qualify to be enrolled in college, or has that also been eliminated?

If you can’t score 22 on the ACT, you shouldn’t be allowed in college, Nevermind teaching
