Port Vincent, LA to Katy, TX in 8 hrs yesterday

what an absolute shite show on I-10 yesterday. Left Port Vincent around noon, knew traffic was going to be heavy but we were not prepared for what was in store for us.
Phase 1
Cross the Miss river - Ten and Twelve were bumper to bumper past the split. Took me an hour to get to college drive from Denham. Dumped off at college and went downtown, to the east boulevard westbound onramp. Traffic on the on-ramp was backed up all the way to Government St. Bridge was bumper to bumper
Phase 2
Cross the Basin - traffic opened up at Port Allen a bit, then bumper to bumper on the beginning of the Basin Bridge. right after we get on the Basin, Waze alert says MAJOR ACCIDENT in 6.3 miles. Bumper to bumper, barely moving for 6 miles. State Trooper goes by us and we have a collective OH shite moment in the car. I am looking at my gas tank, 1/4 tank left. Rookie mistake. Get to where the "wreck" is and nothing. Traffic opens up to the end of the Basin.
Phase 3
Cross the state line - we are about 3 hours in and we haven't even made it to Lafayette. Stop and get gas in Henderson, lots of worried looks on westbound Texas drivers faces. Get back on I-10 and now we are doing the 75 to 55 to stopped to 55 to 75 recipe for a wreck. We actually see a wreck happen on the east bound side near Crowley, silver Suburban goes off the road to avoid stopped traffic and rolls, ends up right side up. Looks pretty bad. We are moving along and look at Waze for the 210 or I-10 decision in LC. Choose 210 because by now it is 5pm and we haven't eaten, hit the Wendys and get back on the road. 210 is not bad, fly through Sulphur and are cruising along then the WAZE alert. MAJOR ACCIDENT in Vinton. Took us an hour to get through and it was a nasty accident, wrecked jeep in the median, lots of cops and ambulances. Finally cross the state line around 6pm
Phase 4
Get past Goodyear - well we are moving now, no issues, fly through Beaumont, nothing going on at the Goodyear Plant, even cruise through the lane diversion at Highlands outside Baytown no problem. Finally get home around 8pm.
Lessons learned...I was stupid to leave at noon, should have left early Sunday morning or left after the game and drove through the night. I know better

No idea where Port Vincent is, but I’ve made the drive on I10 from BR to Houston many, many times.. used to live in Houston and would go to every LSU home game.... was great fro a while to be in a big city close enough to make it home for all the games, but eventually that particular drive wore me down.. didnt matter what time we left Houston on Fridays, we ALWAYS got stuck on the basin, and/or in stop and go traffic for at least 30 miles before the BR bridge... also there was usually bad traffic in either Beaumont, LC, Lafayette or all three.. add in the fact that that stretch of I10 is maybe the most boring, tedious drive in America (even when it’s going smoothly), and i’m really glad I left Texas and will (hopefully) never have to make that drive again.

Thanks for the heads-up.
If I ever go back in time and have to make that drive yesterday, I’ll take the Loop.

I believe the basin bridge accident was an RV that was 100 feet from an exit. That held me up too.

I had a blowout on Saturday coming into Houston on 59, thanks to a piece of metal in that construction zone. Looks like you had a better day than me.

Sunday after Thanksgiving is a total crawl back to Texas. If you go again leave at 6am.
Our friend left at 1 and made it to the woodlands at 10 last night

Luckily I was on the road headed towards Kingwood from Walker at about 8:30. I wanted to leave earlier but it was a long day. Still once I got to 10 traffic was bad all the way until the bridge. It was pretty heavy the whole way but nothing like what I have read from people who left later in the morning/afternoon.

Look at Waze before you leave and take 190 to I-49

I tried that, and it wasn’t much better. It took me 2 hrs to get from BR to Lafayette yesterday afternoon via 190/49.

there was a critical moment in grosse tete where my son said 190 looks good and I said, nah that will add like 20 mins to the trip

If I cant leave at a decent time on Friday I generally say frick it and just leave between 5-6 Saturday morning. On campus before 10 with zero traffic. It is a long arse day though.
