Serious question for the catholics. Could the pope ok priests to get married? Or is that part of the belief system that wont change?

No. It IS a discipline, but one that any one pope could do by himself.
Remember that the good priests, who comprise the vast majority, see their celibacy as a gift and not a burden.
They consider Christ to be the Bridegroom and the Church His Bride. They take up this same mantle and consider the Church their bride, and commit themselves 100% to the Church. Just as a husband in a matrimony should commit himself 100% to his wife.

I always thought a priest that was married would also relate better to the congregation, experiencing the same trials as 90% of the church. But what you said makes sense.
Is there a shortage of priests? i heard there was a shortage of American priests.

While maybe a stretch, I would hardly call it stupid. The Catholic church has always been involved in astronomy, the church built one of the first observatories in 1739. There has been a official Vatican astronomer on the Pope's staff from that time through today.

FWIW priest could marry in the Catholic Church for the first ~1000 years of the Church.

To make a blanket judgement on everybody affiliated with the Church based on the sickness of select individuals is kind of chickenshit, to be quite frank. Not everybody in the Catholic Church feels like what is going on is ok. Even though the current Pope is doing everything in his power to ruin the Catholic Church in an ironical twist to attempt to save face for it, not every person in the Church shares his viewpoint. Believe it or not, there are a bunch of good priests out there, and well intentioned people who would never try to cover up a molestation - priest or not.
I, for one, do not see the Catholic Church as the Pope and the priests only. It is made of millions of Parishioners who serve freely to and for the Church, and for each other. It's just a case of having horrible leadership right now.
