A lot of women will just say they're bi, that will drive that number up. My wife has tons of friends that hooked up with other chicks growing up. It's pretty common, but they're all married and have families now.

It was a poll conducted for GLADD and the findings were a huge outlier compared to many other polls which have shown roughly 3%-5% of the population acutally identifies as something other than heterosexual.
This is nothing more than an attempt to place "empirical data" behind baseless propaganda that more than just a minuscule % of the US population is homosexual/bisexual/other made up orientation.

This is likely the best explanation. Upper middle class heterosexual white kids have been told that they're inherently evil, so this is their way to repent or distance themselves from that moniker and get some sense of self-righteousness in the process. Mix that with the typical teen angst (just like the grunge kids of the 90s) and you've probably got your answer.
