The French Revolution movers and shakers also aspired to adhere to Enligtenment principles, but then they banished churches and replaced them with "Temples of Reason". There may have been deists among the Founding Fathers, but religious liberty garnered the support it did due to the Religious Liberty foundation of the country by Protestant sects escaping persecution. Basically all of New England was founded on this premise, not Deism.
My original post was about how this country was founded on enligtenment principles with an emphasis on the separation of church and state. NOT on Christian beliefs like so many misinformed people believe today.

I think this time it will be different. You are correct that throughout history, religion has just evolved. The predictions are that science will win out, and that as a species humanity will cast aside the idea of higher powers. I'm not entirely convinced that that will be the case, but polls and studies like that makes me question it.
this is built on the idea that humanity will become "enlightened" as a whole, which I don't think will ever happen. There will always be nations or cultures that are somewhat devolved. We see it today.

That's a cynical view, and no one can argue against you're own bias against this.
Because its a tautology.

being inherently selfish doesn't mean you can't be generous. Just that you value generosity.

Organized religion tried to suppress many of the scientific and cultural developments that came out of those things, so you're not helping your point. How many brilliant minds were persecuted, if not ultimately killed, for heresy aka challenging the dogma of the time?
To be fair. Many of the most brilliant minds of the era were Jesuit priests. They were and still are highly dedicated to scientific learning.

[quote]What is religion?
Religion is the rules, regulations, ceremonies and rituals developed by man to create conformity and uniformity in the individual's approach to god. Spirituality is god's call in your soul. Religion is a manmade construct specific to different geographical areas and cultures throughout history. They all describe the same thing at their core. When you tap the essence at the core, you have discovered your spiritual self.

Very similar to the marriage trend in this country. If it doesn't suit you, throw it away.
People really need to better evaluate the marriage stats. It really isn't as bad as people make it out to be

Man, you really drank the kool aid deep, didn't you? You do know that the majority of those scientific and cultural developments came from monks, of course?

It is for a certain demographic. But keep trying to convince yourself you're so counter culture (look...you're doing it now).

There isn't any proof that says clearly one or the other, and its not a risk to believe one for the most part.
there is a definitive cost in believing in religion. There is a trade off in your life, based on your belief. A muslim who prays 5x per day is going to have less free time than an atheist who doesn't pray. Plus what if you pick the wrong religion?

Your truth =/= everyone else's truth.
then its not truth. Its an opinion. I could be convinced that nothing is truly knowable, but you aren't arguing that. You are arguing for subjective truth, which is pretty weird coming from someone who is religious.

I agree with this.

And while that's mostly true, I don't think it's 100% accurate to say that. I think it's a misrepresentation to argue that religion didn't play a role at all. Also, this whole narrative that evangelicals are trying to enforce their shite on others is poppycock. I'm against most blue laws but that shite just doesn't matter at all.
BTW I'm gonna yell "object" at the wedding if there's a priest.

Whatever you need to tell yourself at night. I'm sure I was misinformed and that Galileo was never prosecuted and imprisoned, or that something called the Inquisition never happened. It's all propaganda right?!

None. My beliefs would be a combination of zen buddhism and quantum physics with some gnostic christianity sprinkled in. I was raised a Southern Baptist.

I would argue that religion is a set of beliefs that explain what life is. Certainly, your beliefs would qualify.
So Zen Buddhism, you believe in the supernatural?

Science is good and religion is bad. This is proven by the fact that Galileo was persecuted in the 1600s by religious people.
