I don't think religion is necessarily bad, but the world was not some rosy place when society was characterized by unfettered religious dogma (quite the opposite). Many of our great innovations and developments as Western society have come from challenging those norms, which doesn't necessarily require those innovators to have been anti-religion, either.

Before you can even get to the discussion of religion, you have to decide what you think about God. What is "God?" Where is "God?"
Atheists love to rail against the idea of God, but I think a majority of people will continue to buy into the idea of God. Because without the idea of God, there is no hope and no meaning in the universe.
Without God, everything we think, every idea we have, every concept we claim to understand, is just the product of neurons firing in our brains as a result of evolution. There is no such thing as love, or morality, or judgment, or peace, or consciousness, or eternity. Just matter.
I don't care to live in that universe, or even think about it.

The truth is that the dismissal of "religion" is a religion all the same. It takes a faith based assumption that you are right and that everyone else is wrong. It doesn't make one more "tolerant"; you are only tolerant towards your own beliefs.

I don't think people have a problem with a life force or creative spirit behind all of life. It is when that force is called "God" and then codified into a human thought construct which results in religious dogma. And that dogma is then declared to be the absolute truth for all of humanity with zero evidence to back up the claim. I'm speaking for myself here but I would imagine many nonreligious people would echo those sentiments.
