But being a shithead might be morally OK to a large group of people. Who are you to say your morals are better than theirs? What is the standard? What is it based on?
I think 2 things: vast majority of people are born with an innate morality and I think society evolves constantly to improve our collective view of morality.
See the slavery thing mentioned. It wasn't until 150 years ago that we deemed it morally repugnant and there were still millions of devout Southern Christians who still wanted it at the time.

There isn't a single legitimate religion

Its impossible. At every level of government you have belief systems. They are integral parts of the decision making, when laws are written, when laws or rules and decisions are handed down. You can't get around that.

Religious law has been passed down for millennia, and shaped cultures across the world. People try to discount it because they think they're above it.
And on the verge of destroying the planet. We'd be better off without religion

As someone who was raised Catholic and I have in recent years begun the switch to aethism I have to say in regards to your comment....
Absolutely yes!!!!!! Manners, Decency, Morality has gone out the window in Western Society.

Are you insinuating that Americans are somehow "less" moral now than in prior generations?

I just think none of them have any place in government and sadly there is an absurd amount of legislation guided by Christian beliefs.
The problem isn't religion, it's how much the government gets to control morality. When it comes to that, that's where religion is going to naturally raise its head.
The secondary problem is that, to echo my first comment, 99% of non-secular people lack the understanding (or the want to know) how to shape religious beliefs in much more broadly applicable ideas. They fall back on "Because God said so," rather than digging into deeper understanding, both religious and non-religious. If they really want to believe these things, they should learn more rather than just saying "No."
The reaction by secular folks is predictable, and nearly as divisive because they can't talk to the opposite.
(The blame falls on all sides, we just don't argue meaning anymore, and we don't debate to learn either, we debate to win. And that's a big problem on BOTH sides of any issue.)
quote:
Ill never understand how Christians opposed to gay marriage can't separate a marriage being allowed in a court house and a marriage being forced in your church.
Is it the term marriage?
It's the term "marriage" on BOTH sides, not just Christians. The elegant Civil Union idea was the best way to go about this, but elegant and easy were not enough "winning." But now there are lines, scars, and this kind of debate will continue to rage.

I just believe personal freedoms and liberty
if you want to call that my religion, then so be it

So, if my beliefs are shaped from my Christianity, they can't influence my political ideological? But if your beliefs are influenced from your religion or world view, they are fair game? Since they aren't form an "organized religion"
If your beliefs lead to close-minded legislation that is counter-productive and restricts basic freedoms for others, then no you shouldn't let them influence legislation.

Religion is declining in the US as the US declines as a country and society as a whole declines. Are they connected?

I think humanity's definition of God throughout the ages is just a mental concept or construct that was then codified into religious dogma. In my opinion, the universal intelligence that created this universe is beyond being defined by human labels or human thinking. Humans with their egos worship and revere labels and thought concepts. I don't think God can be experienced through thought concepts. Humans can attempt to describe this intelligence but ultimately all attempts are just signposts to a deeper reality. I believe that all humans have an innate sense that there is something deeper to life than just the material reality we perceive around us with the five senses. If you just look up at the stars on a clear night there is something in you that knows that something much bigger than you created all of this and it didn't happen by complete chance. Evolution of humanity, physical reality (the Earth and everything in it) evolves within the framework of that deeper reality, in my opinion.

I'd say so.
This has been the agenda of Marxism all along. But they use the false principle of progressiveness.

Tell me why the country is declining. Not saying it's not, just want to hear how do we can approach each issue individually to look for causes.

God is #1 in my life. I grew up in church, and as I got older I started putting friends and partying before God and my family. I started thinking that God wasnt real and that we were all just living etc etc. But after a few real life and near death experiences God showed himself to me and I know for a fact he is real. Over the past year I started dealing with high stress and anxiety and high blood pressure, and I decided in june to rededicate my life to the lord and savior Jesus Christ and God. Although I still have problems, my life has been turned around and I have been truly blessed beyond belief. If anyone is at a low point in their life here and you dont see any way out, start praying and let God lead you and I promise you, you wont lose!
To all athiest out there, I have a real question for you. If we the christians are truly wrong about God and Jesus, when we die, at least we lived the right way and if we just go no where but to the grave then so be it. But when you die as an Athiest and you are wrong and there is a God and because you have denied him, then he denies you, then what? Wouldnt you rather accept God and get to know him before the end of your days?
Hope I get to someone and change their mind/life.

Close minded towards whom, surely not religious folk, they can be marginalized.
Counter productive to who's metric?
Restrict freedoms? Should we have a government at all? I am told that I can't drive 150 mph and walk naked through the town square. What kind of freedom are we talking about?

Inner city black folk are more religious than highly educated, upper class white folks FWIW.
The poor south with terrible school systems and infrastructure is far more religious than the rest of the country.
