You weren't getting paid, so where did the money come from?

How are we defining trips?
At minimum I’ve been to Australia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, New Orleans, and Lake Tahoe for Christmas.
*3 day minimum
What do I get?

Having 10k (at least) in cash available for an emergency isn’t hard to accomplish over a few years or less. 10k solves most issues
Transmission goes out, A/C goes out, you’re now in the hole financially. $10k isn’t shite. I don’t feel stable unless I have $50,000+ liquid and I don’t think that’s an outlandish take for someone who’s financially conservative

This is it. I fear too many Americans have slipped so deep into consumption of material goods as a lifestyle they no longer see much of it as being unnecessary. History if full of "rich" people blowing their fortunes due to not being able to see how much they were wasting.
We live in a world that is essentially one giant commercial. People consume without any thought.
I'm betting like most Americans, those making 100K-200K could cut a lot of waste out of their lives and be ok.

I think it’s unreasonable to save 50k for emergencies, in a few years, while paying bills and saving for retirement for low six figure earners. Which was the subject of my post.

In the case of credit card debt, how exactly are they just supposed to up and pay off the debt when there's only enough to make minimum payments?
While the damage in this scenario is already done, future behavior would suggest a lifestyle change, i.e. don't buy something with money not yet earned.

One restaurant trip with my family of 5 is easy $100.
I agree, but this goes back to my previous statement. Families who are struggling financially should not see the inside of a restaurant. I realize this is harsh, unlikely and "wishful" thinking, but it is fact --- if a person is serious about getting and staying out of debt -- and saving for a rainy day(s).

I have almost 5 months of entire household expenses saved collecting 4%. I’m 35 and a homeowner in Denver. I make good money but we’re still conscious about our spending. It’s not hard to save. Just don’t buy everything you see. Consumerism in the US is out of control

A tranny is no where in the neighborhood of the cost of an ac system. Those places will generally offer payment plans with zero interest as well. They know not everybody can drop 10k in cash on an ac system. If you aren’t a complete idiot you can use credit cards to your advantage as well

Our society is so fricked if this is the prevailing mindset. I love how you think financed money or credit card debt going out isn’t worse than cash going out. If you have $10,000 and go $15,000 into debt, you’re still $-5,000 whether it makes you feel better at the moment or not

He did say they have 0% interest at a lot of places. I've got the cash to buy a new HVAC system, but if you give me 6 months 0% interest I'm taking that deal every time.

It’s very hard to save for a lot of people.
How this board is seemingly incapable of understanding the macro point here is shocking. Do people waste money? Absolutely, yes no question
But two college educated people should be able to waste a little money. They shouldn’t be eating beans and rice or driving 15 year old cars or barely saving for retirement so they can take their kids to the beach for 4 days. It will cost a couple from Baton Rouge $1,500 minimum to take their kids to an astros game in Houston, that’s fricking insane.
And instead of focusing on how ridiculous that is and how we got there, you shoot directly to the lowest common denominator like a fricking retard

A person could very easily afford that on 200k/year salary.

The middle class is hit the hardest by inflation
Poors get bailed out by receiving record levels of welfare and don’t pay any sort of social cost for it. Most milk the system and live as comfortably in some cases as people in the middle class.
The people making well into 6 figures aren’t as impacted by the rising costs (yet).
The middle class is screwed because they can “afford” everything, but inflation is outpacing earnings. What used to be extra for savings or vacations is now pushed into the budget to maintain lifestyle.
ETA: long story short. If you are middle class and chasing the same lifestyle your parents gave you growing up, you’ll need to make 2-3 times what they did.
