is this still acceptable? Should the consumer actually give a shite if it charges you supposedly 47 cents for me to swipe a card to get a less than $5 item? Cost of doing business, it's a plastic world. Deal with it.

I agree. It's a card world. Businesses need to get on board and stop f'ing the consumer.

why wouldn't it be? If the place of business has to pay more to the CC company than the cost of the pack of gum you're buying, they've basically paid you for that gum.

It's a business, they can set a minimum if they want and if you don't like it you don't have to use a CC there. Pretty simple.

Then the consumer is a dumb arse who doesn't understand how business works. If it costs the business 47 cents minimum to swipe a credit card and someone is buying a $1.39 coke on credit, that 47 cent fee just ate up any profit margin the business would've made on the sale.

Yep.

Another pro tip: that 20% charge you get when you leave your tab open at a bar is also unsustainable. No one ever fights it though.

business doesn't even offer a "we have to tack on the 47 cents on top of your $1.39 charge" which i would probably be more inclined to accept than a dumb $5 minimum.

While I get what you are saying and agree with it.

That's not the way it works. No, they can't set a minimum amount.

As a small business owner this is something we're wrestling with at this very moment.

On one hand, the customer wants and deserves transparency in pricing. On the other hand, why should I give up 3% or more of my earnings simply because you wanted to use a card instead of cash? For the small transactions it's even worse if the processing company has a minimum fee.

I agree though, it's a plastic world nowadays. I think setting a minimum for card transactions is probably the right decision for convenience store type businesses. Locally in Tampa, it's becoming more common to see cash/credit pricing in effect even at restaurants/bars. YMMV...

You'll lose a lot more than 3% by only taking cash.

Just add it in to your prices.
