Our young people here, and a few old ones, eat up the pablum served by the left as fast as they can.
They have no idea that all that " free stuff" comes with the highest price of all- their freedom.
These HK young people know what's up and they're willing to die for it.
Keep in mind the freedom they want is primarily democratic rule. HK has very strong social programs like welfare and a form of universal public healthcare. They equate closer to the northern European countries than the US in those regards.

Cause suicide still means something to asians and can be celebrated.
Dying for a cause seems a lot more honorable than killing myself for it.

Depends on who is defining honor. Some people may believe choosing to protest by controlling not to live in a world where you dont agree..and choosing this, to some is seen as more honorable.
But I agree with you.

Believe it or not, What made Tienamen Square possible was the fax machine.
It enabled them to know in real time exactly who had whose deer sausage.

I feel like we do as well.
I was mixing metaphors to an extent, but I really feel the Left here would happily trade individual freedoms for a more socialist/communist rule.
Getting offtopic, I guess. I'm glad the mods didn't move this thread to PT.

I was just in Shenzen not too long ago. Nice place
Everyone there I talked to knows this won't end well and there is nothing anyone can do

They may have the, possibly correct, idea it will bring more sympathy to their cause. The only hope HK has if China decides to roll is outside intervention and if suicides help hasten action it would be honorable in the big picture. I don't think the "world" will come to their aid.

It is. I spend a week or two every quarter there at our design center. We would always cross over to spend a day or two in Hong Kong as well. Next month's trip should be interesting.

I would think a flip side of that is that a people already pretty beaten down and knowing they are likely to get “disappeared” for crimes, real or imaginary, may be motivated to start stirring up shite.
A man with no hope is a very dangerous man.
When that's the normal you grow up with it's hard to believe that something truly different can exist, it's even harder to believe you can actually achieve it by over-throwing a government damned well out of Orwell's 1984.

Huge demonstration planned for this Saturday.
quote:
In the previous two rotations – in 2017 and 2018 – state media reports noted that the number of troops and equipment had not changed. This year the report does not include that detail. It is estimated there are between 8,000 and 10,000 troops in the garrison, on either side of the border.
The movements come before a major anti-government demonstration planned for Saturday, as Hong Kong nears its third month of mass protests. On Thursday, the organiser of the demonstration, Civil Human Rights Front, received notice that police had banned the event.
