PLA building up 20 miles from Hong Kong

Armored Personnel Carriers and Military forces of the People’s Liberation Army will soon be on their way to Hong Kong. They are building up in Shenzhen which is 20 miles north of Hong Kong.

No way China is going to back down from this. They can score a great victory by stopping all protests and returning Hong Kong back to normal with their new laws in place.
Could this be Tiananmen Square 2.0?

For HK the words of Dylan are apropos:
“It’s not dark yet, but it’s gettin’ there”

Tienanmen Square had the benefit of there being no smart phones nor internet to broadcast the worst of the images after the Chinese government shut down media broadcasts. I say this because with the proliferation of such tech, this means the Chinese government can't afford to let its 1+ billion citizens see a small group standing up to it and win.
When you start hearing the words "media blackout", that's when the shite is starting to hit the fan. Hard.

This as they did before.

No matter what China does, proof of what they do to Honk Kong will get out somehow. And it will potentially have huge international repercussions given that HK was supposed to be guaranteed certain rights once the Brits turned it back over to China.
Won’t save a lot of the people who get sent to camps or shot, but it won’t be as easy for them to suppress internally as they did with Tianimen Square.

What are they protesting? It’s not like they have racial statues in China

They are protesting China’s new law which means that anyone suspected of committing a crime can be sent to China under the new extradition treaty. If you commit a major crime, you just disappear in China. Nobody is safe from that even the guy who build the world’s largest building in the world who has also disappeared in China.

At nearly three times the size of the Pentagon, the New Century Global Center in Chengdu, China, has claimed the title of world's largest building. WSJ's Deborah Kan and James T. Areddy discuss what makes the center more than just a building as well as the mysterious disappearance of its owner.

This is what that building looks like. It’s massive.
It’s 4 times the size of the Vatican.

The encroachment of the Chinese Communist government on their free way of life.

The Chinese government sees that as the lesser of two evils (compared to looking weak to their citizens). Whatever they lose internationally they know they can rebuild over time, and they are a patient group.

Best of luck to the people of Hong Kong.
I hope they're able to find creative ways to continue their protests and make things hard for the Chinese government without getting themselves killed.

Sounds like a lovely place
Can we send Skillet to China?

I live in HK, and a lot of the protestors have no intention of backing down. Several have already committed suicide in the cause. However, it is hard to imagine a plausible end game here.

I would think a flip side of that is that a people already pretty beaten down and knowing they are likely to get “disappeared” for crimes, real or imaginary, may be motivated to start stirring up shite.

An "Asian spring" has been coming for a long time now. I watched this build up three years ago... And then fizzle.
I don't think it can this time. And this time the PLA is dumb enough to respond.
First step is to get them to act. Second step is to motivate your younger followers to do something stupid and get killed publicly. Third step is to use that to manipulate more people into following your cause.
Standard revolution 101.
I wish them luck.

quote:in the umbrella movement 5 years ago, they shut down a big part of central for weeks with a peaceful protest and got zero concessions. They feel like peaceful protest doesn't work, hence the more aggressive tactics this time.
