And I think it only ramps up from here.
One thing to keep in mind that this is a country that had the “one child” policy for decades and families chose boys overwhelmingly, meaning tons of men with little to no chance of ever getting married and having a family.
That kind of demographic mix tends to be a shitstorm waiting to happen, such as in the Middle East where the “haves” can take up to four wives and the average man has absolutely no chance at one. It may not be exactly why terrorism is huge over there but lack of pussy can be a huge motivator.
It also means fewer levers that can be used against them.
What’s China going to do, threaten their wife and kids? Oh, wait, they don’t have either of those.

There was never a one child policy in Hong Kong though.

Yeah, but there is on the mainland where there are 1.3 billion people, a lot of them men with little to no hope of a full life. It's all those disaffected people on the mainland that are the reason the PLA is about to go in dry on Hong Kong. They don't want the HK spark reaching that powderkeg.

While true, the new age means that China also has new information dissemenation tools at its disposal. Or maybe anti-dissemination tools is the more accurate word.
Namely, I expect this will be the first time that the full force of the citizen score system gets thrown around to suppress ‘anti-Chinese mentalities’. Which of course is just a cover for anti-Chinese government mentalities. Share a video of army abuse? Cut your score in half. Friends with someone who shares a video of army abuse? Cut your score in half. Any anti government messaging will be meet on with a plethora of economic and freedom consequences through the citizen score system.
That won’t stop twitter from going crazy with the videos that do leak of course, but it might minimize the spread of information internally. Either way, should be a fascinating event to unfold. It’ll pit the full weight of the ‘every person is a reporter’ generation against the most technologically advanced governmental anti-open-information tool ever devised. And regardless of who wins, the battle will be monumentally important for the rest of the world moving forward. Everyone stay tuned.

Will be interesting if shite really hits the fan.
At the least it should tone down the howls about the tariffs from all except IBChinaman.

Does Hong Kong have a military?

no national guard if that's what you're asking. being part of china, there has been PLA units stationed in HK, since the handover from the uk. apparently the units mobilizing are some sort of armed police, not pla. they are trained to put down riots.
Posted on 8/13/19 at 8:24 am to Tigerbait337
No. Just a police force that is the current primary target of protests. the handover contact in 97 allowed for the PLA to protect the territory. So HK is pretty defenseless.

quote:correct. They're different units of the police force. The PLA had never been activated in HK to my knowledge.

They can score a great victory by stopping all protests and returning Hong Kong back to normal with their new laws in place.
According to whom?

It may end up being a mix of a Morton’s Fork and self-fulfilling prophecy.
China goes easy on HK, mainland China wants the same treatment which eventually weakens the government’s hold.
China goes hard on HK, mainland China may go past “cowed” (which is what the government wants) to “pissed” and sets the flames of revolution going.
The government is trying to shore up their control and stay in power but most choices they can make have a high potential of undermining that very goal.
