There would be no need for suburbs if every major city proper in America wasn't a shithole.

I don't care how nice a big city is, I will never want to live in one.

Been there, done that, fricking hate all the people living on top of each other.

I'm not the only one....hence suburbs and rural areas.

This is 100% aimed at the suburbs and rural areas, for purely political reasons.

That along with forcing the issue on electric vehicles.

My initial thought was this is a good idea as long as it is a replacement of the gas tax. I did not have to do a lot of googling to figure out that proponents of a VMT want it in addition to existing gas taxes.

There is no way in hell they will get rid of the gas tax. This is the US government we're talking about. They never give up revenue. Ever.

where are you seeing they want both?

the article says it's a trade

American drivers could soon trade paying taxes on gas at the pump for owing the government annual 'per-mile user fees

I know nothing of this plan but honestly a mile tax would be more fair across the board than taxes on gas

They're basically one in the same. It's a use tax.

I googled and found this Forbes article
quote:

“Instituting a VMT tax and eliminating the gas tax would lower the incentive to buy a fuel-efficient hybrid or electric vehicle,” explained WBUR-Boston contributor Frederick Hewett. “At a time when the state is working hard to reduce carbon emissions, it doesn’t make sense to treat a Nissan Leaf the same as a Chevy Suburban.”

quote:

Many VMT proponents have already made it clear they view the tax not as a replacement for existing fuel taxes, but as a supplemental levy.

State Farm has a device they trick you into using, telling you it gives you cheaper ins rates. Figured that out early, and no longer comply with any of their requests/demands for odometer correlation. The devices are sitting dead inside our glove boxes. Soon will vanish. with my blessing.

Drivers of powered cars have been paying consumption taxes for fuel.

Are you referring to fossil fueled vehicles or electric vehicles? It’s always seemed to me EV’s avoid paying a road tax which this would then even the playing field for if it actually replaced the tax (yes I realize that’s a big “if”). Or is there some way they currently tax EV’s in a similar fashion?

I don’t really see an issue here with a mileage tax replacing the gas tax

It's cute that you think one would go away.

I'd only support this if it's a complete replacement for federal gas tax. Not as an add-on.

have you ever known Democrats to replace a tax or remove a tax? And what makes you think you’ll get to vote on this?

I would be okay with it if it were specific to EV’s, which don’t contribute to the gas tax.

But I doubt the government will let that happen when they can screw over suburban/rural people and discourage gasoline vehicles with a double tax simultaneously.

How would they calculate a per-mile tax?
GPS tracker possibly.

Wouldn’t put it beyond them.
