American drivers could soon trade paying taxes on gas at the pump for owing the government annual 'per-mile user fees,' under a new pilot program recently passed by the Senate in Joe Biden's $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal.

A 2019 report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that a federal VMT tax could reduce damage to US highways and lessen traffic congestion by encouraging trucking companies to 'change what kinds of trucks they used or where or when they drove.'

Some VMT tax opponents are concerned that replacing existing gas taxes would lessen the appeal of electric vehicles.

GPS on your phone and then mandating that all new vehicles be able to report mileage by a future date.

How could they possibly know how far or how much I’m driving?

If this is something for new vehicles it will solidify me never getting a new truck.

Cars have black boxes that could easily be used to record that info by way of a mandatory yearly federal inspection

If only there was an instrument that measures this...and what if they put it on the dash or made it accessible through the computer?

Oh well, maybe some day.

I'd be curious to know how that would work for a parent who owns the car that their kid(s) drives? Pay this same tax for every vehicle you own that is driven?

My question wasn't from the technology side, it's from the implementation side. People won't just submit to that and just drive around not complying.

They could get the info from annual inspections (aka brake tags). Imagine some guy at the local Jiffy Lube fat fingers your mileage and bumps it up 100,000 miles accidentally. I’m sure the IRS will be understanding.

Why not tax us for the air we breathe also?

It’s science and good for the environment

Phone GPS is unreliable as hell in my experience. I can be 3 blocks away from a location and it will say that I am already there.

I know nothing of this plan but honestly a mile tax would be more fair across the board than taxes on gas

Require states to get odometer readings through registrations and inspection stickers. OR the IRS could do random audits and make examples of people that lie.

(or both)

A per-mileage tax is actually an anti-EV tax but more importantly to them it is anti-rural and anti-suburban which supersedes all else.

The urban planners that get government jobs HATE suburbs. they see sprawl as the source of many of society's problems.

Right, but look around at all the expired tags on the road. People just give them the middle finger.

They can make you report it, verifying odometer difference. I used to hate doing monthly mileage and receipts for GOV.

Drivers of powered cars have been paying consumption taxes for fuel.

I don’t really see an issue here with a mileage tax replacing the gas tax… although I don’t know how the government can possibly track this without being a creepy AF big brother.

Your takeaway from the last year and a half is that people just won't submit?
