7.3's were great, but the only way you got 20mpg was with an 80mph tailwind.

Incorrect.

We had a 2wd '96 Powerstroke that consistently got over 20mpg on the interstate.

Well, yeah probably.

I'd be more concerned with large, powerful trucks becoming extinct thanks to envirofruits.

It's happening slowly but surely with cars.

Huh? Cars are faster today on average than they've ever been. Just because they're doing it with turbo charged 4 or 6 cylinder engines instead of V8s doesn't take away their power and speed. And new cars dwarf old cars.

They are faster today but there's more a car than just raw speed. The sound is much of it. And 6 bangers can sound awesome.

The twin turbo 4 in my Ford Edge Sport sounds pretty awesome. And the low 14 second 1/4 mile time is pretty nice in a crossover SUV that will get 30 mpg on the highway at 70 mph.

Big and powerful cars are more plentiful than they've ever been. Accords and Camrys can be had with almost 300hp now. It's crazy.

Someone posted it a while back, but the V6 models of today's Camry and Accord sedans would beat most, if not all, of the stock muscle cars from the '60s & early '70s. There's a lot of cognitive dissonance out there when it comes to cars - people just don't want to believe that the pinup large displacement V8 muscle car they lusted after for decades was not as fast as a new V6 Camry.

If you had a 6sp with a camper top and 80 psi in the tires you might have hit 20mpg,but at about 50mph. Any reputable diesel shop will tell yall you're full of doodoo.

FWIW, the 5.9s used to regularly get high 20s. Emissions regulations killed fuel mileage. I got like 12mpg stock on my 6.4, and 23 tuned

While I love trucks, I get 40 mpg in a 4x4 ford kuga euro SUV 2 liter diesel. Not amazing sex appeal, but not atrocious either. Not sure I would spend the money now on a 16mpg truck.

20mpg was pretty easy to accomplish in a 2wd 7.3 with highway gears.

I fear a $20K engine replacement.

Plus, I'm selling this one to my best bud so I don't want any issues.

Ferrari 308s back in the early 80s weren't all that fast either.

Are you speaking from experience? Seriously.

A 2wd '96 PSD with 3.55 gears barely turns over 1600 rpm at 70.

We also have a 2000 7.3L PSD with 4.10s. It turns over 2200 at 70 and does not get near the mileage that the '96 did.

That would depend on the torque curve for the motor.

I get better mileage at 50 than I do at 70. But I also get better mileage at 80 than I do at 70. The rpms are about 300 higher.

Yup, experience with 7.3's and 6.0's. I have a built 6.0 currently, and I know how much more efficient it is than any 7.3. I hand calculate mileage regularly.
