Used to work in a restaurant and you see it all the time. It's almost always these ugly, fat middle aged women who just treat the servers like trash. Oddly enough though, these types are usually good tippers. Go figure.

I've eaten at many restaurants in my life, and I have never had service that prompted me to humiliate another person. I have, however, seen many customers berate and belittle service people with no real justification. I don't know if it has always been this way, but there are a lot of people out there who think they are more important than they actually are. I saw this just about everyday when I worked in retail.

Where are the managers in all this? A good one will know when the customer is being an a-hole and will stand up for his people.
A reasonably respectful customer with unusual requirements is one thing. Abusive customers can hit the road.

I used to work front desk at a doctor's office. You get treated like this as a matter of routine.
Willem Defoe was on Marc Maron's podcast. He said his dad was a doc and his mom was a nurse. Mom worked the front office.
If the doc was running late, the patients would curse and abuse mom about the delay, like it was all her fault. Then when doc showed up, they were all smiles and fawned all over him, never saying shite about the wait time.
A listener wrote in to say that she works the front counter at a clinic, and nothing has changed in the 50 years or so since then.

I take extra good care of my friendly local service folks to make up for the general trashy nimrods they have to deal with.

Yep. I no longer work the front, and people are totally different once they get to the back. And it doesn't always have to be the doctor is running late or a billing issue. Sometimes they just walk up and are so rude and demeaning for no damn reason. I had never seen people behave that way prior to working medical. It shocks me the amount of ppl who think this is okay behavior. Working front desk has a shelf life for most people.

My wife, when young, worked at a Chinese restaurant as a summer job. There was a Weight Watchers aerobics place next door. A group of women would come after class and all want water, lemons and coffee. Coffee was $.90 after tax and they would always give her a dollar each and tell her to keep the change. This was after 5 cups of coffee each. While not germane, the smallest was over 200 lbs.
The later class came in for dinner and always got pork fried rice. It was $2.80 after tax and they would give her $3.00.
The owner made them pool tips and the older waitresses would steal from the community tip jar. To this day she tips appropriately, even if the service was a little off.

Never a good idea to belittle the people who prepare your food.

I have been in the restaurant business a long time and African American women are the worst...they modify the crap out of everything, act like you will rip them off and complain about everything.
Generally poor people suck regardless of race...they can't really afford to be there so they expect the world, something free and don't tip.
I watched a lady yesterday get all pissed and ask for the manager at Waffle House because server didn't respond to her obnoxious "hey!"... the poor server was at the register trying ring someone up and didn't even know what was going on customer talked to the Mgr...as soon as she was done I went over and told him what really went on. She saw me talking to the mgr and asked me what did I think I was doing...I told her I was bitching about aggravating customers he lets in his restaurant...by the time she caught on I was on my way out...

And they eat 3/4 of their food before they decide they don’t like it and want it off the bill.

I hate the way people badmouth Larry Leo.

A lot of people are dicks
Some people do it for laughs
Some do it to make themselves feel better
Even more are just hypocrites.

We aren't standing right by every table and hearing every interaction. Experienced servers know it comes with the territory. I train mine to not let them get to them. These people want a reaction. When you don't give it to them then you have the upper hand

I'm never rude to service industry people. If I don't like the service, I leave a shitty tip.

A friend worked at a Mexican restaurant when he was in college. Two women started coming in after work and enjoying complimentary chips and salsa, plus a refreshing glass or two of free water, then leaving without ordering food or leaving a tip.
The third time they popped in for their happy hour, they were told that chips and salsa would be $3.50 if no food order. They went ballistic and claimed they were being ripped off and discriminated against. Chips and salsa are free!

I hate when people say this. You don't want it "made right", you want it made for your convience, regardless of if it's right or not.

This is 100% the case. Patients will berate the girls in my office and when I walk in everything is just peachy. The second I walk out they start berating them again.
It's simply people trying to assert some sort of authority who have none in real life. Anyone they perceive as below them in any given situation is fair game. 99.99999999999% of the time in my office it's medicaid patients (of which we see very few). Their entire existence is at the bottom of the barrel, so of they think for one second they're above someone they sure as hell will make it known.
