How does one get back more than they pay?

It's a negative income tax liability.

Businesses love the EIC...thousands of dollars in the hands of people who will spend it all within a month or two. It's economic stimulus, in a way.

It's not a stimulus. It's moving money from one sector to another. It's a type of welfare.

I still remember the first time I heard about someone that claims another persons kids so they can back more money, and splitting it with that person that has the kid(s) but can't get any more back because they don't work.

It seems very prevalent among some communities.

Your other option is to overpay them all year, let them earn interest on your money, and you get a check back months after the year ended.

There's a third option too. Calculate your withholding correctly and pay/receive little/nothing every year.

Pretty easy actually.

Sometimes you're just intentionally dense just to disagree with a liberal.

It's fricking stimulus. Same as a tax cut, Bush's tax refunds, Obama's stimulus package, FDR's work programs...pumping government dollars (or debt) into the private economy to take advantage of the multiplier effect.

Well the people voting for him are a bunch of losers that never worked in their lives or are/were bitter liberal arts majors.

But they aren’t good money managers. Most who get EIC refunds spend it up on high dollar items, then they’re right back where they were.

Completely and utterly disagree that EIC is the same as a tax cut.

This seems to have really become a thing in the last 5-10 years.

How old are you? I have heard this for my entire adult life.

A guy I know has a nephew that’s one one of these. He’s like 22, lives with his parents along with his “wife” and their kid. He and his wife sit in his room playing PS4 and getting stoned all day while his parents actually raise his kid. He gets part time jobs, usually fast food, but it never lasts. His “wife” hasn’t worked a day in her life as far as I can tell. Their tax “return” this year is like $8,000 or more. I can’t remember the exact number but it was enough to make me want to vomit.

Didn't there used to be something with EIC that limited amount & maybe even eliminated it if you were being supported like this by a family member?

Yeah, it's annoying hearing people talk about getting their tax refund as though it is a source of income that they didn't work for.

what's funny about that. We've got 5k in tax returns coming and 5k in bonuses. Plus my stocks are doing well.

Maybe you should withhold more and pay your fair share
