This seems to have really become a thing in the last 5-10 years. They seem to have no concept that you don’t “get” taxes, you “pay” taxes. EIC is the devil. My wife and myself work all year, having taxes withheld, only to have to come up with thousands more by April 15. Infuriates me.

If this happens often, do something about it. Sounds like you need to adjust your withholding.

there should be no such thing as refundable tax credits.

you're tax liability is zero? you can have what you overpaid. You don't get more than what you paid

The devil has many names. Lucifer, The Morning Star, Beelzebub, Satan, Old Scratch, Mephistopholes, EIC, Foosball...

Likely you have tax deductions that you’re not taking advantage of while completing your tax forms.

I feel the same way. Every year we get four full months of gleeful, idiotic "it's tax time!" ads aimed at the EIC crowd. My reactions range from eye-rolling to full on terror. It really sucks and it's good to know I'm not the only one who suffers through this.

If you were getting money back or were breaking even would you be “infuriated”?

I work with lots of low income people with lots of kids. Those guys/gals get thousands back. My co-worker and his wife are expecting something like 10k back. I don't think they even paid that much in, but they will get a bunch..

I chuckle every time I read someones post on the Money Talk Board about them waiting for their tax return to come in.

Your other option is to overpay them all year, let them earn interest on your money, and you get a check back months after the year ended.
