Why do people care so much about whatever other people do for a living?

This is an odd complaint.

Maybe they are in such a specialized field that it would absolutely bore everybody to death if they described it?

I like my job a lot (project manager/inside salesman for a waterworks company), and can explain it well, but most folks would be bored to tears by the details, so I just gloss over it usually.

I mean, most people don't really know (or care) what the hell "waterworks" actually is (myself included before the career field piqued my interest ). If someone presses me for details, that's one thing, but I'm not gonna delve into all of it from jump street.

Exactly.

Let's talk about cars or football or interesting stuff.

I love what I do, but not everybody is so interested in it.

The three most boring things you can discuss with a stranger are your kids, your job and your fantasy football team. Most people keep it as brief as possible.

Because a majority of the people in my field don't understand what I do so some random stranger probably won't understand when I try to explain it. If it's someone that I know is in my field I go more in depth but there is no reason to explain what I do to a stranger.

Trying to explain IT/engineering related topics to someone with no experience in the matter is taxing and ultimately ends up with a confused look on the persons face.

I have people at my office who do not fully understand what I do. I'm sure as shite not spending my time trying to explain it to someone not in the industry.

Why Did You Capitalize Every Word But The Word To In Your Title?

Because that is the proper way to write out a title.

Here is nothing I hate more than a stranger asking me what I do for a living.

It's like they're trying to size me up to see who makes more money.

It's like when people ask "where are you from"

Do you think anyone actually gives a flying frick? It's just a convenient conversation starter. That said, why respond with a lengthy reply when you know the asker probably dgaf

Any other social norms I can help you with?

I've never known the specific rules for capitalization in titles so I looked it up.

LINK

quote:

Generally, these parts of speech are capitalized in titles.
-Nouns (man, bus, book)
-Adjectives (angry, lovely, small)
-Verbs (run, eat, sleep)
-Adverbs (slowly, quickly, quietly)
-Pronouns (he, she, it)
-Subordinating conjunctions (as, because, that)

quote:

Generally, we do not capitalize:
-Articles: a, an, the
-Coordinating Conjunctions: and, but, or, for, nor, etc.
-Prepositions (fewer than five letters): on, at, to, from, by, etc.

So in the title of this thread, to is a preposition and therefore not capitalized, while their is a pronoun, so it is capitalized.

(If you are just being a smart arse and trolling, well you got me.)

When people ask me I just tell them I'm a merchant of death. They never ask for more after that. Haven't really figured out why.
