Eagle Rare is really not bad at all. The 10 year old is the superior. Personally think Blanton's is just OK....probably overpriced.
Now, Pappy Van Winkle and Jefferson Ocean, that is some good bourbon. But you need it with a little ice. Although the Jefferson might be better without

I mean, at least put some water or ice in there to open it up. Sipping a good bourbon/whisky straight is pretty dumb.
Watering down a good bourbon or whiskey is really dumb.

It is an acquired taste, Sir.

Elmer T Lee liked his with a little Sprite, and by god that’s how I like mine too. Well, Sprite Zero.

he price of the bottle doesn’t mean much. I’ve been in the industry for 15 years. There are bottles priced around 20 bucks that are better than some in the 100s.
And I drink mine with a tiny splash of water.
OP conveniently left the thread without even saying what whiskey it was. It could be something like an Islay Scotch which is jarring the first time you drink it.
*spoke too soon sorry OP. That is a strong whiskey. A few drops of water would do it good. Im weird...but I dont like whiskey being cold so id also try it without ice.

Alcohol actually lowers testosterone. Makes sense why a board full of Fat Baws is up in arms about drinking whiskey neat

If you aren't a whiskey drinker, I wouldn't recommend starting off with barrel proof bourbon, especially 120+ proof bourbon. If you drink enough you will become acclimated to the proof and it won't be so harsh, but I would start in the 90-100 proof range if you are just starting out.

To the OP, and this quote....caring what other people enjoy to drink is really dumb.
Some people like it straight, some like it on ice, some like to mix with coke or sprite. This is America....the greatest land in the world where you can do whatever you like...last I checked anyway.

The 10 year old is superior to the 17? 20? 25?

Only thing I’m drinking neat is Wild Turkey American Honey. Pride isn’t making me drink something that tastes terrible.

Maybe I should have said "drops" of water? Watering bourbon down is something you came up with in your own head.

I had an old fashioned the other day with a good rye whiskey, pretty hard to beat unless you like fruity rum drinks. Just don't be an a-hole and mix that whole bottle of $100 whiskey with coke. Gift it to someone that would enjoy it.

What about Scotch? Rum? Tequila?
Is this your opinion about bourbon only or all high alcohol liquors?

Refuse to believe people can enjoy sipping this shite unless its mixed in coke or sprite.
As with most alcohol, it's an acquired taste. Meaning at first you have to drink enough to numb the senses. Do that enough times and your brain will tell you that you like the taste because your brain likes what alcohol does to it.

That’s fine, maybe you don’t have a taste for it. Or maybe you just bought an overpriced whiskey. Nobody’s going to force it on you either way.
Your experience doesn’t negate the existence of people who genuinely enjoy it, though. Personally, it’s my drink of choice for sipping, which I do about once a week. Whether I take it neat (with just a few drops of water), over cold stones, or over ice depends on the type and brand. They’re all different, and I’ve learned pretty well what I like and don’t like.
I will cop to ordering Jack or Crown & Coke when I’m at a party or event just because it’s cheaper and/or lasts longer, but as a very petite female I can get away with being pragmatic like that.
ETA that I just saw what was posted while I was typing my original reply. Yeah, that’s not so much a “bad buy” as it is really not beginner-level whiskey. If you do want to acquire the taste, start with a lower proof/milder bourbon. You can get some very decent ones for way, way less money.
