I've never met a dude who was militant about this

I know a lot of guys (like me) who professionally use a different variation than their childhood name. But I genuinely don't care which you use, so much so that people will occasionally try to pin me down on it and I have to convince them I don't have a preference. The more "professional" variant is just what I prefer for written stuff, to be honest.

The only people I've seen get really touchy about this are females. I know 2-3 who had a variation of their name (not anything bad, and a real name) they went by in college and they're pretty opposed to being called it now. I think it's an attempt to leave behind some reputation/history they developed when they were called that...

There are a certain number of people who refer to me by a nickname that most other people are not aware of.

Yeah I don’t really get it. I have three different name variations and I prefer leaving it up to the individual to have their pick.

I'm never demanded people call me any variation of my name. As a child I was Timmy to everyone, until 6th or 7th grade when a friend (also named Timothy) gave his mother an earful for calling me Timmy, so I became Tim. Kinda, sorta, not exactly...

I'm an old fart now. Most people call me Tim. Some immediate family members still call me Timmy, as well as most neices and nephews and I'm fine with that. One eldery aunt calls me Timothy we she's pissed at me or very serious about something.

A few friends and business associates will occasionally call me Timmy to frick with me or to try to get a rise out of me, but honestly, it really doesn't bother me. Thats what my parents called me and I've been called a lot worse. It's too late for me to re-name myself.

These are the same people that list their pronouns in their email. At least one I know. A sales rep I deal with changed his name to some weird name, and lists his pronouns in his emails.

I've seen it happen three times around friends who started going by a different version of their name upon meeting future spouses.
I know two people who have done this, both for professional reasons.

Normal people don’t do that

Unless I guess they found out they were kidnapped and had their name changed maybe

I have a friend who went by Jimmy his whole life. In his 30s he wanted to be more professional and asked everyone to call him James. Long story short…it was a bad move on his part and everyone ended up calling him Jimmy James.

My brother has a weird first name but a very common middle name. He has always gone by his middle name. His resume lists his full name so when he got hired the company that hired him issued an ID tag, name plate and computer credentials based on the first name on his resume. He didn't want to cause a fuss and correct people on his first day at work so he just let everyone use the first name. For five years he went through the charade of his coworkers calling him a different name than he had ever been called.

What’s up with these people you’ve been knowing your whole life and suddenly in their 30s Bill wants to be called William? Joe wants to be called Joseph.

Probably just want it to match the headstone.

He's not just your friend, we all know him. Slippin' Jimmy upgraded himself to James McGill Esq.

A guy I was friends with in high school is an Orthopedic surgeon. I stayed friends mostly from afar for most of the 30 years I lived in Dallas. I did go visit him, while I was home for Christmas one year, after one of his kids had a terrible brain injury. We were already both in our 50's the 1st time I saw him as a patient.

As they were taking me back to an examination room, I saw him at his clinic's nursing station and said "Hey, Richard, I mean, Dr. Ballard."

He laughed and said I could call him whatever I wanted to. One of the nurses, who he had told about us growing up together said, "All of the other guys from Farmerville call him Chick, which was his nickname, and what everyone had called him since I was preschool aged. I laugh at myself for worrying about what I called him at his office after hearing that because I knew it was true.

He told me a funny story about how the mayor of Farmerville called and told him to make an appointment for a city employee who'd been injured on the job. He said the mayor didn't know the guy who got hurt's real name, but would call him back with it. Then he told him it was "Hunk A'Cheese", that we'd gone to school and been high school sport teammates with. I instantly knew who he was talking about, but the guy was a couple of years younger than me and I didn't remember his real name either.

The best way to get called by a certain name is to ask not to be called by that name.

Bill and want to be William? Fine.

I get it. You’re a grown man.

Bill and wants to be Fred. I can’t do a totally different name.
