What’s up with these people you’ve been knowing your whole life and suddenly in their 30s Bill wants to be called William? Joe wants to be called Joseph. And they are upset when you occasionally forget. What kind of pretentious stuff is this?
I’ve been calling you Bill for 30 years. It might be a little bit of a transition remembering to call you William.
Give me a break.

I'm sorry I've lied to you for so long, but you can call me "Dad" now, my son.

My younger brother was Mikie until 7th grade when he wanted to be called Mike. All of my friends call him Mikie to this day.

Your name is your name. Deal with it.

NASCAR driver Joey Logano tried to switch to Joseph(or was it Joe) but he realized real quick that wasn’t going to catch on.

I have a childish sounding nickname that if you called me that, it meant you and I go way back. Because of some new work I started recently that exposed it to a lot of people it has really caught fire again.

I actually prefer the name, but in the past if I heard someone yell it in DFW Airport, I was turning around because there was no doubt that person knew me. Now it's kind of watered down where even people I kind of know use it because they heard other people call me that.

ETA: Kind of odd, my wife and ex-girlfriends have always refused to use it. I guess it sounds weird during intimate times.

I know some offshore guys that have two different names. They let people at work call them one thing and their friends and family at home call them something else

I've seen it happen three times around friends who started going by a different version of their name upon meeting future spouses. One marriage ended in less than 2 years, one is on the rocks and likely to end, and the third just launched.
