People over 40 going back to school

What are you doing? Unless you're going back to school for an engineering or accounting degree, what the hell are you doing with your life? Did you ever think maybe it's time to stop with these dreams of higher learning, and instead learn an actual skill that can get you money?

I went to Ptec school at age 43. Have Three young children. Currently in operations at a chemical plant.

Maybe they got rich and are now pursuing a hobby? I know a guy that did that. He was a surgeon but somehow started having seizures in like his 50s so he had to retire. He went back to college and was taking design classes or some shite (like architecture stuff) just for shits and gigs.
But most are probably like you're example where it's not worth it when you break down the numbers.

Maybe Mary is trying to better her life after a situation earlier couldn't afford her the time or money to attend when she was 20. Maybe she's getting a Business Management degree so a bank would be more apt to give her a loan to expand her little internet business?

Maybe they had to go back to school to keep their current job? Know lots of nurses in that position. Their hospital requiring them to have a BSN so they are going back to school to get it so they can keep their job. I had to do the same thing at 39.
