I'm 44. My company pays for continuing education. So far I've completed two Spanish classes (we are an international company and do a lot of business in SA) and have enrolled in a Project Management class for PMP certification (we are in software). When I get through with those, I plan on getting my MBA. My wife and I had kids at 22. I had to put a lot of things on hold. My youngest goes to college this year and it's time for me to start career number two.
Here's a little hint: that 40+ man or woman that's in your class could give two fricks about what your dumbass thinks, says, or does.

Maybe they have advanced as far as they can and their employer told them, "we want to put you in a higher position, but can't because of your lack of a degree."
That happens.
That happens.

You get one crack at this whole being alive thing. Why not make the most of it and try to better oneself?

Their hospital requiring them to have a BSN so they are going back to school to get it so they can keep their job. I had to do the same thing at 39.
My mom went back at 40 to get her BSN. She went to grad school in her late 40s/early 50s to get master’s degrees to become a NP & CNM. She loved her profession more than anyone I know, so clearly not a waste.

I am 38 and have been back in school taking night classes and online classes for the last 4 years.
I am a project manager in Houston for Oil/Gas contractor. I have worked my way up through my current company and have been a supervisor over much younger and inexperienced people that have college degrees.
The simple reason to get a degree is because with all my years of experience, to move up to the next step or to pursue work at a different company, you must have a 4 year degree. It can be in basket weaving, it doesn't matter. People just want the piece of paper. As long as you demonstrate your value and experience the degree simply gets you in the door.
Plus, you are a douche

That doesn't affect the cost benefit of going back to school. Like nurses, there are sometimes it is worth it and I don't think people have a problem with it. However, if you go back and spend 50k to get a job that pays 50k/year you'd be better off investing that cash. There's qualitative factors here like happiness and bettering yourself, but the OP has a point as far as the financial credibility this has.

I had a class one time that had this older woman in it, had to be in her 60's atleast. Someone asked her why she was going back to school, her response "because I'm bored."

So if someone were making 30k with a ceiling close to that now and spent 50k to get a 50k job, they wouldn't benefit from a 20k a year raise? 10 years is 200k more with that increase alone. What about all of the potential advancements in the career?

Here's a guy who doesn't know the difference between a trade school and what a university education has to offer.

Still leaves them 20 years of higher pay before retirement. I don't see the issue.

I had a couple of people that were 60+ in one of my gen ed classes freshman year. Pretty crazy. One guy announced to the class that he takes one class every year for tax purposes apparently. The other was an older lady, maybe in her 70s, who looked like she was just trying to get a degree for personal accomplishment
But if you’re in your 40s trying to switch career fields by getting a degree, it’s too late for that

Come on Pecker. There are many things to bitch about, but this is not one of them. Let’s get a good animal thread going.
