I don't have an issue with people recording as long as they recognize they're in a shared space and understand basic gym etiquette (no recording other folks without permission, no recording in the locker room, you're in a shared space so people WILL walk in front of your camera).
I had a lady ask the other day if I could hold her phone to record during her set because she was trying to fix an issue with her form. Did it while I was resting between sets and went on about my business.

What drives me nuts are the a-holes who sit on the equipment looking at their phones when I need to use that machine. Or worse, when I go to use a machine and a guy says “i’m almost finished w that”.

Okay serious answer…
Many people do it as the direction of their trainer so they can be critiqued on form. I’ve instructed people to do this before.
Some do it so they can evaluate their form themselves.
Others are doing it for likes.
If you are a serious gym person, your mind muscle connectivity will tell you if you’re doing it right or not. More often than not, that takes years of experience.

Not much different than lifelong golfer in his 40s and 50s sporting a 20+ handicap filming himself at the range while grunting during his swing with a driver spraying balls from one side to the other.

There was a younger girl in the gym yesterday and she had a gym mat laid out between the cable pull down machine and was filming herself doing various exercises. Most of the exercises were not even using the machine, yet, she was occupying the space. She stayed there for about 45 minutes.
