$1000 on a pearl necklace? That's insane. Have you done no research or are you looking to have diamonds in it or something? Absolute max $500.

You can get a nice strand for that price. Not cheap at all. Look for akoya cultured pearls over freshwater. The sizes will be more uniform & not lumpy.

I'm not pretending to be super refined, but my eye can't tell the difference between a $200 strand & a $1000 strand. Just telling you what to look for if you want quality.

Markup on pearls is ridiculous like all jewelry. I can tell you that Sams and Costco have some very nice quality strands strung and knotted properly.

Well this thread went exactly like I thought it would.

Rub them on your teeth, if they aren't gritty they aren't real.

You are full of it, but have some great one liners.

I have been looking around as well at pearls. Mikimoto is more like the Rolex of pearls. Take a look at Pearl Paradise online. From what I have read they have pretty good stuff at reasonable prices. Just a disclaimer I have not bought from them before but that's probably where I'll make my purchase.
Take a look at these (supposed to be higher quality than some of the others on the site):

My wife spent $3300 on Tiffany pearls in 2012
They look good I guess
Edit: Never mind she said it was $6300

Look at the Perl Source.com. I have purchased from them a couple of times and been very happy. 2 days ago I got an email for 20% off

Try American Pearl on line. Good prices and quality. Bought several strands from them over the years. Get Akoya salt water.

Not really any brands, pearls all come from the same places, some lines just have higher standards for imperfections.
Decide on the type of Pearl, then color, then size of strand and Pearl. At a $1000 budget, you aren't going to get in to a very high grade/size. If you want to make this an annual thing people are doing add a pearl again. Buy a new Pearl or two every year to add to the strand. That way you can shave much larger higher quality of pearls.
