Your kids' school doesn't have a Senior Ring Ceremony or Ring Ding? It's for the Junior Class after the Seniors' last day. I thought this was a thing all over, but maybe it's just a Louisiana or just a southern thing.

My son was really set on a ring until a couple of nights ago when we discussed the almost certainty that he will wear the ring for 1-1.5 years, then it becomes a paper weight when he gets to college. Now he wants a new Apple Watch. It's more budget friendly that the ring he wanted, but I was really hoping he'd find a nicer watch he could wear on formal occasions. C'est la vie- we'll get him the Apple Watch.
Is he going to wear the Apple watch for more than 1-1.5 years?

I had zero interest in getting a ring. My mom was shocked I didn’t want that crap. I knew it would be a total waste.

I got luggage. Not even kidding. I did need luggage as I was moving to Athens for college. That was in the 90's, I still have two of the smaller pieces today and still use them.

Do people get gifts for getting to 12th grade? How long has that been going on?
I remember graduation gifts but finishing 11th grade gifts are new to me too.

I had zero interest in a ring and didn’t ask for anything else. Of course that was 25 years ago, but the gift culture is out of control these days. I will tell my kids when that time comes I will put money in your college fund or buy them some stock with that money, but I’m not paying for a senior ring and flushing money down the drain. they have Apple Watches already, and I’ll just hand them down my old ones when I get new ones.

He got one for 8th Grade Graduation, too and it crapped out 6-7 months ago, so it lasted about 2.5 years. He bought a new in box 'Apple Watch' & 'AirPod Pros' from some random woman that came into his work for $140...a hard lesson was learned that day
Like I said, I wish he would have chosen something that would last longer- I would have gotten him some nice boots if he wanted, but I'll consider the Apple Watch a win over the ring.

He got one for 8th Grade Graduation,
You Gen X parents are absolutely ruining y'all's kids

Got one and wore it most of senior year. Can't ring knock freshmen and 8th graders without it.
Reading this thread, I was thinking, "What's a few hundred dollars for a unique memento?" Then I remembered how insane the price of metals is these days. Gold class rings are now $1500-$2000. Hard no. I might spring for the electrolux or whatever it's called. But no way I would trust a 17 year old with a $2000 piece of jewelry.

Only poors and idiots celebrate high school graduation. It should be a minimum requirement

I have a Senior now, they get their Senior ring at the end of their Junior year, shortly after the Seniors graduate. I bought mine a nice Seiko watch instead, something he can use for many years. I did the same thing form my oldest son who graduated in 2020. After he graduates this year, he and I and 2 of his friends on the golf team are going to Myrtle Beach for a week long golf trip to celebrate their graduation. It should be fun.

Yup- the siladium rings run about $300, which is all I’m willing to spend, unless he decides he wants something he can use for much longer.

Just don’t buy him or any graduating senior Oh the Places You’ll Go. I don’t know why that Dr Seuss book is a present for anyone, especially an 18 year old.

Yep, I got 2 and am spending a small fortune.

My dad bought me a .308 deer rifle and scope instead of a ring. I still use it 20 years later.
So he bought you two rings right?
