How in the world are so many people so unprepared for this?

We dont need anymore boomers screaming at their kids about self reliance. That era is over and no longer fits what the modern world is today.
Not a boomer but are you serious Clark?
Wow, just let your kids live with you the rest of their lives…
ETA: One day you will be gone, then what will they do?

The Louisiana TOPS Opportunity Award covers the full cost of standard tuition at any eligible Louisiana public college or university. Because it is pegged directly to basic tuition, the exact cash amount fluctuates depending on the institution you choose to attend.
Does not cover mandatory fees
Again, read what I already posted
Quit being a boomer

Even if you enlist in the LA national guard, you will receive a tuition exemption for however long it takes to graduate from LSU.

Automatic downvote for blaming problems on "boomers." That derangement has some similarities to TDS.

There are many kids who should be living at home and going to college. That’s an easy way to avoid taking out loans.
If there is a 4 year school nearby, sure that is an option

True minus the fees.

Even 20 years ago I paid almost as much, if not more, in "fees" than I did in the TOPS covered tuition.
Today tuition is 4K, fees are 2k per semester

Not wrong
But who is lying to them?

How far are YOU from current realities?
LSU 2026-27 annual tuition is ~$8,340
LSU 2026-27 annual fees are ~$4,386
Even the worst student that could get into LSU would be responsible for less than $5,000 of mandatory fees PER YEAR. If you can't earn $5k in a calendar year doing some kind of work, that's a real problem. I worked through high school and built a nest egg up before I started college.

Amen. Hell I worked while in college. It’s not a hard concept.

I’m sure it’s gone up but it was $1500 for dues which included 3 meals Monday thru Friday and only another $500 to live there a semester.
Seriously asking, not being a poo-head: how long ago was this?

Parents, school counselors, and the entire “system”. They’re told “go get a degree, any degree, and you will be able to pay the loans back.”
It’s been a narrative pushed for years.
