Look at the average financial state of a family in the US and tell me you're still surprised.
College enrollment might be at an all-time high by percentage, but less than 40% of people have a bachelor's degree.
And as someone who's worked in higher education for 10+ years, there's a lot of bad financial advice floating around.

My parents filled up my tank, and bought my books for my first semester and said happy birthday. That was it, rest was on me.

All a kid needs is a freaking 2.5 GPA in Louisiana to cover 100% of tuition. If you can't muster that, you should be going to a trade school or community college.

“Housing and meal plan 16k.”
And ppl make fun at others for joining a fraternity/sorority. I’m sure it’s gone up but it was $1500 for dues which included 3 meals Monday thru Friday and only another $500 to live there a semester.

Pretty sure he is referring to how the concept that you can simply go out in the world at 18 and make your own way alone is completely dead and not true anymore. That is different from sheltered kids needing to be coddled every step of the way.
Look at any chart that shows cost of housing vs income, all inflation adjusted and you'll see it really fast
Its objective fact that the economic situation currently is absolutely nothing like the past two generations.
It doesn't really matter how frugal and responsible you are, you are behind the curve as the baseline on purchasing your first home. Mostly because cheap starter homes almost don't exist anymore

Yeah, and because of this, and the fact that tuition increases increases state liability, the state doesn't allow much in terms of tuition increases. Schools compensated by adding non tuition expenses to attendance
Even 20 years ago I paid almost as much, if not more, in "fees" than I did in the TOPS covered tuition.
How far are you from the current realities

Yea, it's like people don't realize the main part of these huge tuitions is housing and feeding your kid for a year. The dorms should be affordable, but they are not. You can save money by living off campus with some roommates, and having them fend for themselves for food, but you wont save as much as you think. And for the meal plan, it sucks seeing upfront cost, but add up every meal a kid eats for 6 months. It's part of the experience.
